Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton. Broward College's policy regarding this law became effective August 5, 1993. Faculty members are covered effective February 5, 1994. Eligible employees are entitled to up to 12 weeks of leave for each 12-month period. During the leave period, the College will continue to pay the employee's health benefits at the same level and conditions as if the employee had continued to work. This leave benefit can be taken for one of the following reasons: |
 | Birth of a child. |  | Placement of a child for adoption or foster care. |  | Caring for a spouse, child or parent with a serious health condition. |  | Serious health condition of the employee. |
 | Due to a "qualifying exigency" arising out of spouse, child or parent on active duty or impending call to active duty. |
