Legislative update for Week 3 - student
Broward Community College Legislative Update
Budget
Week three of the legislative session has ended. The halls and rooms in the Capitol Complex have one prevailing concern: “the current budget crisis, how did it happen, how long will it last and what will be the outcome?”
The Senate Higher Education Appropriation Committee released its budget recommendation a short while ago.
- Gross general revenue reduction for community colleges is the Senate proposed budget is 5.1%
- A distribution of $168.1 million in new lottery funds divided among community colleges, universities, workforce and FSAG reduces the reduction percentage to 1.6%.
- The recommended 6% tuition increase Senator Lynn asked members to support would, “offset” the cuts to community colleges.
- Gross general revenue reduction for universities of 5.1%
- The recommended 6% tuition increase would almost offset the 1.6% remaining cut after the lottery restoration to universities
More bad news: There are no non-recurring dollars in the Senate. Non-recurring projects will not be funded.
- There will not be dollars to fund the Challenge grants at Community Colleges or Universities.
- There will be no funding for new baccalaureates.
- Succeed Grants are gone
- The newly established Medical Schools at UCF and FIU will not receive the next year of funding
- There will be no funding for university Centers of Excellence
