BCC to participate in inaugural ideas exchange
Broward Community College will serve as a host site and a sponsor of VisionBROWARD’s inaugural South Florida Ideas Exchange on May 8-11, 2008. The event – the first of its kind in South Florida – will offer a schedule of activities ranging from sports and wellness, cultural diversity, education, and environmental issues. The ideas exchange combines elements from the tri-county area of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami Dade counties for future collaboration and coordination with its campaign “Become the Solution.” The ideas exchange seeks to stimulate thought, creativity and dialogue as South Florida plans for its future.

May 8: Event: FINA AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix Time: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Location: Fort Lauderdale Hall of Fame Pool Complex Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children (children under 10 are admitted free) The competition is the 38th annual international diving competition and a preview of the top divers at the Beijing Olympics. Also contains a comedy and clown-diving exhibition and an Asian cultural festival with demonstrations of Asian cooking, martial arts, music and dancing. The evening features a special appearance by the 2008 Olympic mascots.
Event: South Florida Ideas Exchange Reception and Special Performance Time: 6:30 p.m. Location: Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 S.W. Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Cost: $50 per person Event concludes with a special performance.
Event: “The Haitian Community: Where Art, Culture and Business Come Together,” presented by CORPRA, Inc., in conjunction with Je dis Culture. Time: 9 p.m. Location: Gold Choice Ballroom, 345 South State Road 7, Margate. Cost: $5 per person Activities include dance exhibition, art and traditional Haitian fare.
May 9 Event: Breakout sessions, demonstrations, interactive programs and expo Time: 8:30 a.m. Location: Broward Community College, A. Hugh Adams Campus, Building 10, 3501 S.W. Davie Road, Davie. Cost: None Breakout sessions include:
| | • “Water Conservation Solutions for South Florida,” Energy Conservation Solutions for South Florida,” “Hands-On Interactivity in the Marketplace,” “Community Sustainable Initiatives in South Florida,” presented by the environmental commission. • The Florida Association of Non-Profit Organizations will present a session on marketing and self-regulation in the non-profit sector and an awards presentation. Other topics to be covered include using technology to advance your mission, volunteerism, civic engagement and management capacity. • The Broward Farm Bureau will present a variety of topics – land trusts and open space, Project Stable for farm animal therapy and the handicapped, 4-H agricultural specialty programs, agriculture and South Florida economic development, turning waste into energy and on how to live, work and play the environmental way. • The education committee will present experts from K-12 education to discuss postsecondary and workforce development education and how to improve education in Florida. • The Broward County Nutrition and Fitness Task Force members will present an exhibition and workshop with keynote speaker Mark Bergel, founder and executive director of A Wider Circle, an organization endeavoring to end poverty in our lifetimes. • The Florida Association of Non-Profit Organizations will present an expo and marketplace and a presentation on the future of nonprofits and charitable organizations. • The redevelopment committee, led by James Carras and Jennifer Gomez, will present a forum on the future of Broward County and opportunities for redeveloping existing communities and neighborhoods. |

Event: “Countdown to Beijing,” reception Time: 5:30 to 9 p.m. Location: Fort Lauderdale Hall of Fame Pool Complex, 1 Hall of Fame Drive, Fort Lauderdale. Cost: $40 for hall of fame members, $65 for non-members. Reception includes cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

10 a.m.: the Mother’s Day Brunch and contest awards will take place at the park, with winners announced in the contest’s song, art, photo poetry and healthy meals competitions. Cost for the brunch is $10 per person.
