Greene scholarship recipients announced
Four Broward Community College students from southern Broward County have been selected as recipients of Dr. William E. Greene Study-Abroad Scholarships, and as a result will be traveling to study in southern Spain.
The students, Caitlin Stull, of Hollywood; Megan Pratt, of Davie; Theobald Thang, of Hollywood and Mario Ibanez, of Cooper City, will he headed to Seville, Spain in the fall of 2008 to spend a semester attending the International College of Seville, an affiliate institution of BCC.
The Greene scholarships are named in honor of the retired director of BCC’s international education program. In 2005, the BCC District Board of Trustees created the Greene scholarship program from funds generated by BCC’s overseas program and will cover airfare, housing, tuition and program fees for the four recipients.
The names of the recipients were announced on May 5, 2008 after a rigorous selection process that included grade-point average considerations, an essay and personal interviews by the international education advisory committee of the top candidates. The process was open to all degree-seeking students currently enrolled at BCC.
The International College of Seville has provided study-abroad opportunities for American college students for nearly 30 years. During that time, more than 6,000 students representing more than 100 colleges and universities have attended the ICS, among them several hundred from BCC.
Dr. David Moore, associate vice president for international education, said the Greene scholarship program can make a significant impact of the lives and perspective of BCC students.
“It is our hope that through this experience in Spain our Greene scholars will broaden their perspectives on international education and world relations,” he said. “Their lives will be different because of this opportunity. We hope they will be better prepared to make a positive contribution to our society and our world.”
