Program Description
This certificate program is composed of 8 courses (24 credits total). The 8 courses do not have to be taken in any particular order.
3 cr. FES 2014 Intro to Emergency Management Includes organizational structure/procedures of emergency management programs, the 4 phases of emergency management:: mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, past and current emergency management systems.
3 cr. FFP 1830 Intro to Hazards Natural and man-made hazards / disasters, methods to measure, monitor and predict impact of hazards on society, special emphasis on hazards likely to impact Florida.
3 cr. FFP 2831 Hazard Planning & Mitigation How to develop programs that will reduce losses from future disasters, emergencies and other extreme events caused by natural and man-made hazards.
3 cr. FFP 2840 Disaster Response & Recovery How to develop programs designed to plan for and assist in disaster response and recovery efforts.
3 cr. FFP 2800 Emergency Management Public Education Programs A study of the design, development and delivery of disaster safety programs, targeting program audiences, evaluation of effectiveness of programs.
3 cr. DSC 1011 Terrorism & Domestic Security Terrorist organizations, investigating terrorism threats, conduction vulnerability assessments of potential targets, government response / recovery to terrorism.
3 cr. FFP 2939 Introduction to Command The Incident Command System, how personnel effectively protect selves and others from variety of dangers, perform responder tasks in situations that may combine hazardous materials with crime scene, coordinate with appropriate local, state and federal authorities.
3 cr. FFP 2841 Emergency Planning for Business & Industry Contingency planning process for disaster preparedness in corporate world, step by step approach to emergency planning, response and recovery for companies of all sizes. |
The Emergency Management vocational certificate, offered through the Broward College's Institute of Public Safety located at the Central Campus in Davie (954-201-6791), is designed for current Public Safety employees (Law Enforcement, Fire Service or Public Health) seeking career advancement by obtaining the knowledge and skills to become effective Emergency Managers within their area of expertise. This program is also appropriate for students seeking entry-level positions in the area of Public Safety / Emergency Management. Students who successfully complete the certificate program may use the credits earned toward the A.S. in Emergency Management degree.
