Work Study FAQ- Broward Community College

How do I get Work-Study funds?

Work-Study is a federally funded need-based program. You must apply for financial aid by completing the FAFSA on the Web and say "yes" to work study to be considered eligible.

 

What are the other requirements in order to qualify for work-study?

  • Have a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen.
  • Be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits in a financial aid approved academic program leading to a degree or certificate.
  • Not be in default of any federal Title IV loan program or owe a repayment of federal and/or state grant(s).
  • Complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before the priority deadline of April 15th.  If funds are available, students who apply after that deadline date may still be considered for work-study.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Maintain good academic standing and satisfactory academic progress.

What are the work-study placement steps if a student has been awarded work-study?

  • Visit the BCC web page (www.broward.edu) and select Get money for classes under the action links.
  • Once Get money for classes has been clicked, then select Work Study Jobs
  • View available jobs on line and select a job by clicking the job number.
  • Visit the Student Financial Services office to determine eligibility where you will receive a referral card indicating the weekly hours you may work.
  • Call the employing department where the job is located and schedule an interview.
  • Download the Student Employment Packet if you are a new student in the work-study program and bring it with you to the interview. You also need to bring the referral card that you received from the Financial Aid advisor indicating your eligibility to the interview.
  • Once you have secured the job, submit the forms to the Student Employment office for processing.
  • Please contact your supervisor to make sure you are approved to begin work.

Remember:

  • To be eligible for work-study, a student must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours with a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average.
  • A student who is interested in working with the Florida Work Experience Program or the America Reads Program must be fingerprinted by the Broward County School Board prior to the start of employment and should not begin working until he/she is approved by the Student Employment Office.

Do the work study funds affect my Pell award?
No, work study does not conflict with your Pell award.

 

If I am not eligible for Pell Grants or Stafford Loans, can I still be qualified for work-study?

Yes, please contact the Student Employment Office at (954) 201-7623 for details.

 

How many hours per week can I work?

Students may be approved to work up to 20 hours per week depending on eligibility.

 

After I am awarded work-study, what is my next step? How can I access the work-study forms online?

You may visit the forms page to access the work study applications online.

 

I have completed and submitted the work-study application. When can I start working?

After you are approved by the Student Employment Office, your supervisor will be notified as to when you may begin to work and how many hours per week you will be eligible to work. 

 

How will I be paid?

Students are paid bi-monthly via mailed check or by completing and submitting the Direct Deposit form to the Student Financial Services Office. This form will allow us to have your check directly deposited in your bank account. Forms can be found at the forms page.  Students who submit the Direct Deposit form must also complete the Security Clearance forms since pay stubs can only be viewed online.  Please complete the steps to View Pay Stubs online found at the forms page.

 

When should the time sheets be submitted for processing?

All time sheets must be faxed and/or submitted via campus mail before the due date for students to be paid. You will be given a work study payroll calendar  by your supervisor to use as your guide.

 

I applied for Financial Aid but did not get awarded work-study. Why?

All students must apply for Financial Aid by the priority deadline as the funds go quickly.

 

If I was not awarded Work-Study can I still be awarded and locate a job?

Yes, if you have completed the FAFSA and met the requirements. Please contact the Employment office at (954) 201-7623 for more information.

 

Are all jobs located on campus?

 

The majority of the work study jobs are on campus. America Reads program and the Florida Work Experience Program provides the students with the opportunity to work as a tutor and/or teacher assistant in elementary and middle schools.

 

 

What is the hourly rate for Work-Study on campus?

$9.00

 

What is the hourly rate for off campus tutoring positions?

$10.00

 

What if I am awarded Work-Study and I am not interested in being a work-study student?

You must complete a Work-Study acceptance form which can be found on the forms page and check the third box to decline the work-study award.

 

Can I be approved to work in more than one work-study position?

No

 

Are my earnings for work-study taxable?

Yes, your earnings are taxable. A W-2 will be mailed to you from the payroll department at the end of each year. However, your work study earnings should not be included as income on your financial aid form for the following academic year.


Am I required to apply for financial aid each year to be considered for work-study?

Yes

 

Are there work-study positions available in the summer and what are the requirements?

  • Yes
  • Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and must complete the upcoming 2008/2009 Free Application For Federal Aid (FAFSA).
  • All students must be enrolled in at least 6 credits for the entire summer (at least 6 credits in Session 1 only, or a combination of at least 6 credits in Sessions 1 and 2, 1 and 3, or 2 and 3).
