Program Information

Start Date & Program Length: The Radiography Program begins in late August each year. It concludes in late June of the second year of study. The program is therefore, 22 months in length, exclusive of prerequisite courses. The total number of program credits is 77.

Number of Seats: Approximately 35 students are accepted into the program each year.

Time Commitment & Hours: The Radiography Program is a full-time commitment. It cannot be taken part-time. It is primarily a daytime program with hours varying between 8am – 3pm, Monday through Friday. A typical semester involves 2 or 3 days of clinic attendance & 2 or 3 days of classes. Clinical rotations also require some evenings beginning in the 2nd year of the program from 2pm - 10pm. There are no scheduled weekend courses or clinical rotations.

Methods of Instruction & Locations: The Radiography Program consists of on-campus courses, online instruction, & clinical education in area hospitals. All didactic (i.e., lecture) & laboratory courses are taught in building 8 on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie, Florida, with some delivered online. Clinical courses are located in hospitals throughout Broward County. Students may have to drive up to one hour from their home to attend clinical courses. Students will rotate through 3 different hospitals over the length of the program. Prerequisite and general education courses (i.e., courses that do not begin with an "RTE" prefix) may be taken at any Broward College campus or online if available.

Degree & Certification/Licensure: Graduates who successfully complete the program are awarded an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Radiography. Graduates are eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination. Individuals who successfully pass their examination receive a certificate that confers upon its holder the right to use the title Registered Technologist and its abbreviation R.T.(R). Program graduates are also eligible to become licensed in Florida through the Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control.

Accreditation: The Radiography Program maintains regional accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Curriculum: As a blueprint, the program follows the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Radiography Curriculum. The ASRT is the organization that establishes standards of practice for the profession and writes curricula used by educational programs in the United States.

Courses: Each semester students will have at least 3 didactic courses, 1 or 2 laboratory courses, & one clinical course. Didactic (i.e., lecture) courses given on campus meet once per week for 1-3 hours, depending on the number of credits. Web-based didactic courses may be fully online, or blended where students do part of their coursework online & part on campus. Laboratory courses meet on campus once per week for 2 hours. Clinical courses meet twice, or three times per week for 7 hours in the Fall & Winter semesters. In Summer, clinical courses meet 5 hours per day, 5 days per week.

In order to successfully progress through the Radiography Program, students must achieve all cognitive, affective and psychomotor objectives. This requires that a grade of "C" or above be earned in all professional (RTE) didactic courses and an "S" (satisfactory) grade be earned in all clinical and laboratory courses. This requirement is in addition to maintaining an overall degree GPA of at least 2.0. All courses in the Radiography program are sequential. Each course must be passed with a grade of "C" or better to progress to the next scheduled course.
