Spain Program

Exchange your US Classroom for one in Spain and discover a different learning experience.

Since 1979, Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, FL has offered students from colleges around the US to enroll at the International College of Seville or the University of Seville to spend a full semester or part of a summer living and studying in the city of Seville, Spain, one of the most beautiful cities anywhere.

Study in Seville, Spain and earn credit at Broward College or, your home institution in the United States. Through the Semester or Summer in Spain program, you'll join other American students for a semester of learning that won't interrupt your degree program at home and won't require a knowledge of the Spanish language to get started.

Through your studies and while living in Seville, you'll explore the history, art, language, and culture of Spain.

Semester program: The program is offered during the fall and spring at the International College of Seville (ICS), in cooperation with the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS) in Washington, D.C.

Summer program: A five-week summer opportunity is available from the end of May to the beginning of July each year.  In 2008, the dates are May 29 to July 2.

We are also offering an "Arabic Studies in Spain and Morocco" program in 2008 during these same weeks which will include studies in Arabic Art Culture and Language.  This program will culminate with a four day visit to Morocco.

Transfer of credits: All courses are applicable toward degree programs at Broward College and are recognized throughout the US at hundreds of colleges and universities.

Here is what one student from New York wrote:

"Seville is one of the most beautiful cities I´ve ever seen. At night I sometimes believe I´m living in a jewelry box while looking at all the illuminated buildings and bridges. But all the precious stones in the world couldn´t measure up to something as grand as Seville! I pinch myself at least once a day and so far I haven´t woken up. And to be quite honest, I´m already dreading coming home.
Regards from Heaven,
Larissa"

Where is Seville?

Seville is located 300 miles south of Madrid in Andalusia, the southernmost province of Spain that shares the Iberian peninsula with Portugal (see map).  A high speed train from Madrid reaches Seville in just two and 1/2 hours.

Why Seville?

Seville is the capital city of Andalusia and one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  Located on the Guadalquivir River, it is a city of palaces, churches, towers and historic neighborhoods.  The origins of this city date back to Roman times.  It's history includes Visigoth, Arabic, Christian, Jewish and modern cultures and influences.  Seville boasts the world's largest Cathedral just off of the Plaza de Triunfo.  It is the home of Flamenco dancing and the April Feria (April Fair) — a street festival known for its lively and colorful charm.

What courses would I take?

Students take a total of 15 semester hours in Spanish language, culture and society, the European Union, International Relations, Art History and other choices during a full semester schedule. Register at BCC before you leave and you won’t have to worry about transferring credits. They will be on your BCC transcript when you return.

New in 2008!  Summer Arabic Studies program.  Take six credits of Arabic Studies between May 29 and July 2, with side excursions to Granada and Cordoba followed by a four day trip to Morocco at the end of this five week experience!  Go to ics-seville.org for more details about the Arabic Studies program.

How much will it cost?

Since fees are subject to change, contact the International Education Institute at Broward College for current prices. A significant scholarship toward the program fee is available to BC students!

Where are classes offered?

Courses are offered at two locations in Seville:

Taught in English:

The International College of Seville (ICS), has classrooms, a library, wi-fi capacity, student services, and a student lounge facility.

Taught in Spanish:

The University of Seville, a full-service, major international university that offers courses from a wide variety of programs with credits that transfer to colleges throughout the USA.  Begun in the 15th century, the University is located in various places around town.  The CCIS students attend classes in a baroque 18th century building that was the fist cigar factory in the world, the Real Fabrica de Tobaccos.  All classes offered at the University are in Spanish.

Where will I live?

Again, there are two options:

Live with a Spanish family that has been qualified by the ICS:

You will be immersed in Spanish culture by living and eating meals with your host family on a daily basis. In just one semester you will learn more about Spain and the Spanish language than in years of classroom study back home.

Live in a “residencia”:

You will live along with other students and a house mother who prepares meals and provides basic laundry services.  (This option is not available in the summer four week program).

How do I apply?

Contact Dr. David Moore at the International Education Institute of BCC — (954) 201-7707, or dmoore@broward.edu for information. You will receive a packet in the mail in a few days. Applications are available right away by clicking here and downloading them from the CCIS web site.  Complete the forms and take them to your study abroad advisor at your home college in the US.  Your college does not have to be a member of CCIS for you to attend the Semester/Summer in Spain program.

When are classes offered?

Semester in Spain students may enroll for either the fall session (September-December) or the spring session (January-May). The summer program is five weeks beginning in the final days of May and ending in the first week of July.

How much will it cost?

The Spain program fees are available from the Greene International Education Institute at the phone number and email address provided above and below.   There is one complete program fee which includes instruction and administration in Seville, housing, meals, comprehensive insurance, excursions to other parts of southern Spain, cultural field trips within Seville, and much more.   Degree seeking students at BC are entitled to a significant scholarship.
