Jorge Guerra, Dean Aviation Institute

Jorge is a 25 year aviation professional that has a broad based background in aviation and career technical education. He began his career as a young man working as a baggage loader for National Airlines. Upon graduating from high school in South Florida, he joined the United States Air Force where he served for 10 years as an aircraft maintenance technician on fighter aircraft. He taught for the USAF as a master field training instructor. He received his airframe and power plant certificate and a Bachelor of Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Jorge has held executive positions as a production manager for a repair station and was President of his own repair and consulting firm specializing in advanced composites. He taught at George T. Baker Aviation School in Miami, Florida. He earned his Masters of Science in Educational Leadership from Florida International University and before joining Broward Community College, he served as an administrator for a technical institute for 6 years. Jorge is also an adjunct professor at FIU teaching educational courses to career technology teachers. He is married and has three children.

 

Donnie R. Blalack, Aviation Maintenance Program Manager

Donnie began his career with BCC in 2004 upon retiring from United Airlines after almost 35 years of service. His last position with United was as Aircraft Maintenance Manager for the Miami and Latin American region. Don began his aviation maintenance career upon gradation from high school by joining the U.S. Air force in 1965. While serving in the air forces Military Airlift Command, Don maintained several different types of transport aircraft. United Airlines came after the air force and Don was hired to accomplish jet engine and aircraft overhauls. During this time Don went to night school to obtain his A&P license and transferred to United Airline's operation while continuing to work towards an AA degree with San Jose City College. With a degree in hand, he successfully worked his way into management and continued his education towards a Bachelor of Art's Degree in Management from Saint Mary's College of California. During his career with United Airlines, Don had the opportunity to serve in many capacities in the maintenance field including overhaul mechanic, line A&P mechanic, station and systems planner, supervisor-line maintenance, inter-airline maintenance liaison, and station and regional manager. Numerous special assignments brought on by hard work and dedication to his company allowed for travel to numerous destination for aircraft maintenance related activities in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. His message to all students seeking to better themselves by obtaining the A&P certificates is to work hard, be dedicated, continue to seek higher education and better opportunities, and especially to not give up.                                 

Jan Shakespeare, Flight and Operations Programs Manager

Jan Shakespeare is the program manager overseeing the Professional Pilot Technology, Aviation Operations and Airport Operations Management degree programs for Broward Community College.

Her diverse aviation background began at age of 16 when she soloed in a J3 Cub. She holds FAA certifications for Airline Transport Pilot, flight instructor, airframe & powerplant mechanic and aircraft dispatcher.

Her professional experience includes flying for a Part 121 airline, piloting a Learjet primarily responsible for transporting the University of Miami Transplant Team and years as a flight instructor.  Ms. Shakespeare also spent a number of years working as a maintenance technician for Eastern Airlines and was a senior operations agent with Broward County Aviation Department. 

As an honors graduate of BCC's Professional Pilot Technology and Aviation Maintenance Management Programs, Jan also has a Bachelor of Liberal Studies Cum Laude from Florida Atlantic University and a Masters of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a specialization in Aviation /Aeronautical Safety Systems.  She has developed and teaches online courses for the College and is chief ground instructor responsible for the College’s FAA Air Agency Certificate # ISP8S224Q.

Emilia Colageo, Administrative FAA Records Specialist, Professional Pilot and Operations Programs

Emilia has been employed at Broward Community College since July 1993 and has accepted various positions working in several departments which Emilia says has earned her the distinct background and knowledge of the operations at BCC.

Before joining BCC, she worked in the corporate arena with nine years at Eastern Airlines in the manpower operations, inventory management and pricing departments. She spent most of those years as a Pricing Analyst and was responsible for 1000 commuter markets, keeping them competitive in the industry.

Her background and passion for aviation and the airline industry has attracted her to the Flight and Operations Department and will be a valuable asset to the Aviation Department

David R. Griffith, Instructor Maintenance Technology

David is a native of Barbados. He came to the United States in 1980 and attended Beech Channel High School in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, where he pursued aviation through an internship program. His last year of high school included and internship at the Federal Aviation Administration in the airspace and procedure division. In 1990 he graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute with a BS in Aeronautical studies. He additionally obtained his airframe and power plant license, his private pilot license and also had his first child! He has held positions at Greenwich Aerospace, Fine Air, Commodore Aviation, and most recently Avborne. He has extensive experience in general aviation; corporate jets as well as commercial aircraft. He is committed to sharing his knowledge with his fellow students.

Timothy Griffin, Assistant Professor, Aviation Maintenance Management

Tim is a seasoned maintenance professional with more than 20 years in aviation. Tim is a BCC alumni, having graduated with Honors and was awarded the "Aviation Department Award." He has since successfully completed a Bachelors in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University as well as a Masters degree in Aeronautical Sciences this year. Tim is a third generation family member that has grown up and resided in Fort Lauderdale. He and his family resides locally and Tim is fully committed to the success of our students.

Glenn E. Walters, Instructor, Aviation Maintenance Technology

Glenn has participated in most all aspects of aviation maintenance since 1980. He began his career at Lockheed where he held a variety of job classifications. Since 1985, he has been employed with a major airline. In 1997 he was named "Company Technician of the Quarter." Additionally, Glenn has been employed as a B-747 fleet maintenance manager for a cargo carrier. Glenn received his A&P licenses from Northrop University, his Bachelor Degree in Finance at the University of Texas, and his MBA from Florida Atlantic University; he is very interested in the business aspect of airline and aviation
management. Glenn loves to teach others and share his knowledge that is required to excel as an aviation technician. A true maintenance professional, Glenn today still enjoys the challenges of "rolling up his sleeves and getting involved" in hands-on aircraft maintenance.

Eric J. Boylan, Alpha Eta Rho Advisor, Aviation Institute

Eric was raised in South Florida and began his aviation career at BCC in 1989 where he graduated from the Private Pilot course. Eric then attended Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management Flight Technology with Honor as well as a Masters of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot, Flight Engineer, CFI, CFII, and MEI certificates. Eric has experience on the SAAB 340 turboprop, Boeing 727, DC-10, and many other light twin and single engine aircraft. He has over 1,500 hours experience as a flight instructor and over 4,000 hours total flight time. Eric has returned to the Aviation Institute after having worked there as an Assistant Chief Flight Instructor for two years in 1995. Now he is committed to pass on all that he has learned in the aviation industry to new students as a Ground Instructor, as well as the Advisor to Alpha Eta Rho and Seahawks Flight Team.
  

Emilio Lizarraga Assistant Professor, Maintenance Technology

Emilio is a native of Venezuela and at the age of 19 traveled to the United States to attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. He was awarded a Bachelors of Science degree in 1985 and proceeded to work for several domestic and international airlines, including Presidential in Washington D.C., Discovery Airways in Hawaii, British Airways in Scotland and D.I.A.F (the Ecuadorian Air Force). Emilio resides locally and joined our institute in 1996. His dedication to aviation has and continues to be his focus. He most enjoys student interactions and the opportunities to share his experiences in "the business."

 
Robert L. Lumley, Jr., Instructor, Maintenance Technology

Bob has literally spent his lifetime around North Perry Airport. A graduate of the Miramar school system, he went on to complete his Associate degree in Aviation Administration at BCC. He subsequently obtained his FAA Airframe and Power plant license and Private Pilot certificate while working for local general aviation firms. In 1998 he completed his Master of Business Administration in Aviation. He also has acquired his Master of Aeronautical Science and Bachelors degree in Professional Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is presently an Accident Prevention Counselor for the FAA.
 

  
Oren Wallace, Simulator Lab Coordinator

Oren learned to fly in 1956 in an Aeronaca Champ. After accumulating approximately 400 hours, he took time off (25 years) to get married and raise a family. In 1978 Oren returned to aviation and obtained his CFI, CFII, MEI, AGIIA, and began instructing part time. In 1989, he became a full time instructor for a part 141 flight school. He achieved his Airline Transport Pilot Certificate and became a chief flight instructor in 1990. Oren has accumulated over 6000 hours total time and 5000 hours of instruction. He is now the flight training lab instructor at BCC working with aspiring young pilots as well as airline pilots moving up to the right seat.


Abdolreza (Ray) Roodbari, Aviation Support Specialist

Abdolreza (Ray) is the coordinator of the aircraft hangar operations and labs with specific knowledge of aviation maintenance operations (electricity, hydraulics, reciprocating, engines, turbine engines, ac, etc). His work includes logistical planning, developing and maintaining of labs. He is in charge of budgetary expenditures, inventory control, purchasing of all lab equipment, supplies, chemicals and tools. Ray is an honor graduate from our BCC Aircraft Maintenance Management Program and he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Florida International University (FIU). His experience includes working as an A & P Technician, focusing on preventive maintenance, heavy maintenance, inspection, and periodic services in companies such as Miami Air International and Commodore Aviation Company. Ray is a US citizen born in Iran; he’s married and he’s bilingual in English and Farsi.

Evelyn M. Ruiz, Recruiter/ Advisor/ Admissions BCC Aviation Institute

Evelyn is responsible for the recruitment and advisement of all new aviation students including aviation maintenance, flight and operations. She is in charge of developing and implementing promotional and marketing initiatives and represents the aviation institute in several events including high schools, open houses and job and career fairs. Evelyn started at Broward Community College’s Aviation Institute in 2006 after working for more than a year as an academic advisor at the office of student affairs at BCC south campus. She came to South Florida ten years ago after finishing her postgraduate studies in communication and local development at the Catholic University in Lyon, France. Evelyn was born in Costa Rica, Central America where she also graduated with a degree in mass communication. Before enrolling in her postgraduate studies in France, Evelyn worked with college students at the university system in Costa Rica for several years. Her experience includes working in distance education, advising college, ESOL and international students, and researching in the fields of communication, education and development. Evelyn is also fluent in English, Spanish and French.

Magdalena Zanco, DCA Administrative Assistant

Maggie started at DCA in 2006 after moving from Texas where she was born and raised. She worked for more than five years at Texas School District in the Human Resources Department and now she is committed to helping all flight students and instructors at the dispatch area of DCA. Maggie, a mother of two, says that she really enjoys Florida because she and her family love the beach and the warm weather.
