Register now button.

Course Description
This course is designed to enhance the clinical decision making and assessment skills of the critical care and emergency department specialty nurse who works with all types of adult critically-ill patients through analysis of a variety of challenging 12-Lead ECGs and case studies. With the numerous advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and other related cardiac disorders, the specialty nurse must be able to quickly recognize abnormalities on the 12-Lead ECG and notify the physician for appropriate intervention.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Describe the derivation of the standard 12 ECG leads, including electrode placement and polarity and views of the heart.
  2. Critically analyze PQRST complexes for any abnormalities of interval lengths, slurring, depression, elevation, inversion, notching and intrinsic deflection.
  3. Define electrical axis, determine mean electrical axis, and state the common causes of axis deviation (LAD, RAD, IAD).
  4. Describe ECG features of: ischemia, injury, infarction; chamber enlargement, bundle branch blocks, hemi blocks, pericarditis, and electrolyte and drug effects.
  5. Interpret 5 (five) 12-Lead ECGs and identify the pathological condition causing the abnormality.

The day’s activities include a three-hour lecture/presentation on cardiac and pulmonary anatomy & physiology as they relate to central lines. Then participants rotate to hands-on skills stations for arterial lines, pulmonary artery catheters, central venous lines and cardiac output. Nursing care, assessments, interventions and outcomes are correlated with what is observed on the monitors.
This is not a beginning nursing course. In order to optimize learning we ask participants to have reviewed tutorials or articles on Hemodynamic Monitoring. To receive the certificate, the participant must attend the full day’s activities.
