Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the training?

This intensive, non-degree technical education provides practical medical and IT knowledge to qualify you to work in the health-care setting. Completers should effectively learn/use electronic health records (EHRs), exchange information and redesign workflows within health-care settings. Each concentration will require completion of five to seven core courses (components).

How long does it take to complete a certificate?

Each certificate can be completed in six months or less.

Do I have to attend classes on campus?

Instruction is delivered primarily online in a distance learning format. However, there may be times when you need to come to campus for registration issues.

I have completed training in information technology (IT) or a technical program to work in a health care setting. Will I have to retake basic coursework in those areas?

Our training will not require you to retake subject matter you have already mastered. Students will be given the opportunity to complete challenge assessments in various content areas. If the score is 70 percent or better, the student will be given a passing grade for the course. Students who have an information technology education/background will be taught the clinical/medical knowledge they need to work in a healthcare setting. Students with a healthcare education/ background will be taught the essentials they need to perform technological work.

What are the types of training available?

Employment roles supported by this program include:

  • Implementation Manager
  • Implementation Support Specialist
  • Technical/Software Support Staff
  • Trainer

What education or background will be required for this training?

This program will require the following:
  • Instruction or two years or more experience in health care
  • Instruction or two years or more experience in information technology

When will this training be available?

The first cohort of students began training on September 30, 2010. Training sessions are offered every other month. Check the schedule for upcoming info sessions and program start dates.

How do I apply and get accepted into this program?

Admissions Criteria include the following: 

  • You must have either healthcare or information technology verifiable experience.
  • You must meet pre-assessment criteria before entering this program.  There is a Pre-Enrollment form that is required. Please e-mail HITECHGRANT@broward.edu for details.
  • This program is fully online with the exception of a possible external internship. You may be required to complete a criminal background check, a drug screening and a medical exam if you participate in any fieldwork.
  • You must have access to a computer meeting the minimum requirements.
This is an intensive training program and is time limited. You must be able to complete the course work in six months or less.

How much will the program cost?

Each course within the selected role has a $50 fee. Each role has at least five to seven core courses that will need to be completed in order to receive a certificate. There are an additional four to eight secondary courses students are encouraged to complete.
