Alumni Scholarships- Broward Community College



Named scholarships begin with a minimum donation of $3,000.00 per year for a current use award. Endowed scholarships require a minimum donation of $20,000.00 the investment earned and awarded from he principle is 3.75% of the endowment based on the Foundation current spending policy.

Named scholarships begin with a minimum contribution of $3,000.00 per year for a current use award.  Endowed scholarships are established in perpetuity and require a minimum donation of $20,000.00 in private contributions.  New endowments are awarded after interest has been accrued over a twelve quarter rolling average in accordance with the investment earned and the Foundation’s spending policy.

 

Here are a few specific examples of alumni affiliated/sponsored scholarships: 

 

Endowed scholarships

 

Steven Berrard Endowed Scholarship Fund - Steven Berrard, chairman of BCC's successful CAMPAIGN 2000 which raised $12 million for scholarships, established this fund to assist deserving BCC students.  Student may attend full- or part-time and must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

 

Robert F. Bocchino Family Scholarship – established by Dr. Irmgard L. Bocchino, Associate Vice President of The Honors Institute at Broward Community College to provide a transfer scholarship for a Honors graduate of distinction further their education at a four-year college.

 

Arden D. Dickey Endowed Scholarship Fund - This scholarship was created by Arden Dickey a member of the BCC Foundation’s board of directors who is chair of the Alumni & Friends Association and also is a BCC Distinguished Alumni.  Students must have a high school GPA of 3.0, maintain a 2.5 GPA at BCC and be enrolled full-time in Business Administration.  The student must also be a graduate of a Broward County High School and demonstrate financial need.

 

Executives Association of Fort Lauderdale Endowed Scholarship Fund - With over 112 members of local business owners and community leaders, this group (also known as "Execs") boasts a large number of alumni who graduated or attended the college. The scholarship is for the benefit of members and their dependents.  Student may attend full - or part-time and must be seeking an AA degree or AS degree in the health sciences or aviation.  Bill Lank a member of the BCC Foundation board of directors and our very own Nancy Botero, executive director of the BCC Foundation are both members of the Fort Lauderdale Executives Association and are BCC Alumni.  BCC is proud to have several other members of the club who are also alumni of the College.

 

Firefighters Scholarship Program - BCC is proud to count a large number of alumni amongst the ranks of the Fire Chiefs Association of Broward County.  This scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic programs to assist students completing their education for a career as a firefighter.  Students should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must pass the Broward Fire Academy agility test before acceptance in the program.  Paramedic and EMT students will be required to complete school ride hours on a rescue unit located in Broward County

 

John P. Giordano, Sr., Athletic Scholarship - This fund was established by John J. Giordano, BCC athletic coordinator, in honor of his late father.  Students must attend full-time and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, demonstrate financial need and be involved in BCC's athletics program.

 

Dr. Willis Holcombe Scholarship - Upon his retirement, Dr. Willis Holcombe, former president of BCC, was given an honorary degree from BCC.  He established this fund as an award for students BCC who attend the BCC Honors Institute.

 

Kate Platt Memorial Endowed Scholarship - This scholarship was established by alumnus and attorney George Platt and his wife Anne.  It is in loving memory of their daughter who tragically died in an automobile accident. The fund was created to assist single mothers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college.  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, must be enrolled full-time and must demonstrate financial need.

 

Sherri Poel Memorial Endowed Scholarship - Sherri Poel attended BCC's two-year Career Pilot Program with the dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot. Her family and friends established this fund to honor her memory and provide assistance to aviation students.  Students may attend enrolled full- or part-time and must be enrolled in a professional technology program in aviation and must be enrolled in or completing a flight course.  Students must demonstrate flying ability by achieving a private pilot's license and demonstrate financial need.

 

The Rising Star Scholarship in Memory of Nancy Kollar - Retired faculty member Dr. Kathy Spanton, and other faculty and staff at the college established this scholarship to recognize the brave life and contribution of the late Nancy Kollar.  She was the first student to be posthumously granted an AS degree from Broward Community College. Her academic excellence, emerging artistic accomplishments, positive attitude and determination made her a beacon of light for others.  Students meeting two of the following criteria are encouraged to apply. The criteria are listed in priority order.  1) Preference for this award is given to either students who are wheelchair users or majoring in art, preferably taking a majority of their classes at North Campus; 2) Students from disciplines other than art who are taking the majority of their classes at North Campus; 3) Students may attend full-time (12 or more credit hours) or part-time (six or more credit hours) and 4) Students must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and 3.0 in their major.

 

Teresa B. Sjogren Endowed Scholarship - A BCC alumna, BCC Foundation board member and attorney, Teresa B. Sjogren, established this fund to illustrate her support the college and its importance in the community.  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and may attend full- or part-time seeking an AA degree or an AS degree in the health sciences or aviation.

 

Alisa Story Memorial Endowed Scholarship  - This fund is reaching its 20th anniversary of celebrating the remarkable life of Alisa Story.  Story was a radiology student at BCC killed by a hit-and-run driver. Her mother Diane Jones established this fund in her memory. The recipient is chosen by the BCC radiology department.  Applicants must be full-time second-year radiology students, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must plan to continue his/her education in another medical imaging or radiation therapy program at BCC.

  

Annual scholarships (received each year to support a specific scholarship on a one-time basis or annually thereafter.) 

 

Leo Goodwin Memorial Scholarship  - BCC is proud to count one of the foundation's representatives of the Goodwin Foundation as an alumnus of the college.  Leo Goodwin Sr. and his wife Lillian are the founders of GEICO Insurance Company. The Goodwins felt very strongly about supporting the community and in the 1950's they decided to make Broward County their principal residence. The Leo Goodwin Foundation has made many contributions to BCC. Leo Goodwin scholarships are awarded to high academic achievers who require financial assistance to return to school or to remain in school.  The student must attend full-time (minimum of 12 credit hours) with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrate financial need.
