BCC LHP Matt Gilson Named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year | Gilson's dominance is honored by the Southern Conference for the 2008 season with his 7-2 record and 1.30 ERA |  LHP Matt Gilson | When you think of the two year body of work that sophomore LHP Matt Gilson has tallied as a Seahawk, few could argue his success. Following a 5-2 freshman year with a 2.63 ERA, Gilson returned only to improve on his freshman campaign with a 7-2 record and a 1.30 ERA in 2008.
As a result, Gilson has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year for 2008. The unassuming Gilson was pleasantly surprised when told by coach Bob Deutschman that he had earned the honor.
"Really, that is an honor but I just wish I could have done more to lead us to the conference title," said Gilson.
Gilson is unconcerned as to which institution he will attend next year, but his focus is on the here and now. | "Right now I am just focusing on us winning Friday versus South Florida. If we are fortunate enough to get past them, then I will focus my attention on Palm Beach. I do know this, I never could have received this award without my teammates and I have all the faith that they will pull through on Friday."
In two years, Gilson has a combined record of 12-4 with a 1.98 ERA in 26 games and 154.2 innings pitched. He has throw four complete games, one shutout, and two saves.
Wherever Gilson is pitching next year his continued dominance will be certain. "He is one of easiest players I have ever had to coach for when it is his time to pitch I know that I am going to get a quality start," praises Deutschman. "He has made my job easy on his turn in the rotation."
Gilson proclaims, "I am grateful for my time here with this coaching staff and my teammates. It will be a lot different at the next place, but I know that I will be prepared because of my work at Broward."
