Tampa, Fla.--Freshman Vanja Mikovic (Delray Beach, Fla.) defeated Raquel Castro of Central Florida C.C. 7-6 (4); 6-3 to win the Region VIII Flight 1 Singles championship.  Mikovic, who entered the tournament ranked 3rd in the state, will now prepare to compete at the National level in the NJCAA Women's Tennis National Championship in Tucson, Ariz. May 4-8, 2008.

Mikovic also won the state title in Flight 1 Doubles paired with freshman Ivana Jiraskova (Litvinov, Czech Republic) as the tandem defeated Central Florida C.C.'s Castro and Kate Mazackova 6-1; 5-7; 10-6 to win the Region VIII Doubles championship.

Jiraskova finished runner-up in the Region VIII Flight 2 Singles as she lost in the championship to Hillsborough C.C.'s Bridgette Carrillo 6-2; 6-2.  Unfortunately the loss will keep her from competing individually at the national tournament.

"Although the team did not qualify as a whole, the individual achievements of these two continue the rich tradition of BCC Women's Tennis," says Athletic Coordinator John Giordano.  "On behalf of Broward Community College and the entire athletic department, we wish them the best at the national tournament."
