Quick Tips

This is your chance to prove to a prospective employer that you are the right person for the job. Here are a few tips that will help you land that dream job.

1. Be prepared

a. Make sure you know the time, building, office number and person(s) you are meeting
b. Make sure you have directions and know where you are going

b1. If necessary, drive to the facility before the day of the interview

c. Conduct research on the company (history, location headquarters, products and services they offer, etc.
d. Prepare a list of question to ask the interviewer(s)
e. Go over the list of "Frequently Asked Questions" (see below)
f. Practice by conducting mock interviews with a friend or relative


2. Dress to Impress

a. Dress business formal unless told otherwise
b. Wear close-toed shoes
c. Avoid excessive make-up and perfume
d. Take out any visible body piercings and cover any tattoos


3. Be on Time

a. Early is on time. Be at least 15-20 minutes early


4. Bring a folder or binder with you

a. Have several copies of your resume in it
b. Have several copies of your references


5. Communication is Key

a. Be confident - Know that you are the best person for the job
b. Make eye contact and greet everyone with a smile and firm hand shake
c. Be sure to sit straight
d. Speak with a strong voice (not too loud), articulate all words and use proper grammar
e. When asked a question don't just answer "yes, I can do that" or "my organizational skills are good," give examples of accomplishments, successful projects, etc. (see list of Traditional vs. Behavioral Interviewing Questions below)
f. Keep in mind that 90% of communication is nonverbal


6. Be sure to thank the interviewer(s) for their time before leaving the interview
