12 Lead EKG Interpretation (Blended)
Course Description:
This course is designed to enhance the clinical decision making and assessment skills of the critical care and emergency department specialty nurse who works with all types of adult critically-ill patients through analysis of a variety of challenging 12-Lead ECGs and case studies. With the numerous advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and other related cardiac disorders, the specialty nurse must be able to quickly recognize abnormalities on the 12-Lead ECG and notify the physician for appropriate intervention.
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Describe the derivation of the standard 12 ECG leads, including electrode placement and polarity and views of the heart.
- Critically analyze PQRST complexes for any abnormalities of interval lengths, slurring,depression, elevation, inversion, notching and intrinsic deflection.
- Define electrical axis, determine mean electrical axis, and state the common causes of axis deviation (LAD, RAD, IAD).
- Describe ECG features of: ischemia, injury, infarction; chamber enlargement, bundle branch blocks, hemiblocks, pericarditis, and electrolyte and drug effects.
- Interpret 5 (five) 12-Lead ECGs and identify the pathological condition causing the abnormality.
