The Introduction to Emergency Nursing's 95 hour theory course provides the basic didactic
content for those interested in entering the field of emergency nursing. The curriculum is based on the educational recommendations from the Emergency Nurses Association. The modules include: Basics of Emergency Care, Clinical Basics, Medical Emergencies, Trauma, Special Populations (OB / GYN emergencies, Pediatric Emergencies, Abuse, Mental Health Emergencies, & Sexual Assault).
The 25 hour Nursing Simulation Course is a course co-requisite and includes simulated patient case scenarios to demonstrate assessment skills and patient management of various disorders on a Patient Simulator. Students will be required to demonstrate that they can evaluate signs and symptoms, intervene, and then evaluate if the selected treatment has been effective. Simulated patient care for the ED patient will include acute coronary syndrome, acute stroke, cardiac arrest, emergency child birth, and pediatric scenarios. Students will create a compassionate environment for the simulated patient and family members. The faculty will guide students as they engage in the ongoing process of questioning and evaluation of practice. In the simulated environment students will feel safe to make a mistake, correct the mistake, and use the learning experience to promote the best patient care in the hospital environment.
