TRIO is a group of federally funded programs. These include Upward Bound, Talent Search, Equal Opportunity Centers, McNair Graduate Programs, Veteran Affairs, and Student Support Services. These programs are all geared to assist low income, first generation, and disabled students achieve academic success.
All TRIO students must be registered and referred by the Office of Disability Services. To be eligible for TRIO Services, please contact your Disability Services Specialist.
In the fall of 2005, Broward College's Office of Disability Services was awarded a $1.1 million grant to administer the Career, Assessment, Mentoring & Planning Using Support for Success program(C.A.M.P.U.S.S). The program's purpose is to target the retention, graduation and transition to a four-year university for students. The TRIO program serves 200 students each year with the following disabilities:
Deafness.
Blindness.
Severe motor impairments.
Specific learning disabilities.
Developmental delays.
Emotional disabilities.
Enroll two-hundred students with the above disabilities by October 31st of each year.
Ensure that thirty-five percent of each year's participants complete/persist each academic year.
Ensure that thirty-five percent of each year's participants are in good academic standing with a 2.0 GPA.
Graduate twenty-five percent of each year's participants with an AA, AS, or ASS degree, or transfer to a four-year college or university within three years of enrollment in the C.A.M.P.U.S.S. program.
To meet our objectives, the TRIO staff works closely with Disability Services Specialist, Broward College faculty, mentors, tutors, and student advisers.
Participants receive:
C.A.M.P.U.S.S. orientation.
Specialized tutoring.
Individualized career counseling to address specific needs.
Academic progress monitoring.
Cross-training on technology such as JAWS, Zoomtext.
Mentoring by successful individuals at Broward College and in the community.
Workshops to develop test taking, organizational and study skills.
Financial Aid counseling.
CAMPUSS is always looking for tutors, mentors, and community CAMPUSS partners.
Work a maximum of 20 hours per week.
Are paid on an hourly basis.
Receive a weekly schedule of the students they serve.
Sit in on their students' classes.
Partner with the students' professors.
Offer students unlimited individual and group tutoring.
Benefit from monthly sessions with the grant's learning disability specialist and other educational consultants.
Are individuals from the Broward College community.
Provide peer mentoring through Broward College's T.E.A.M. (Trying Education as Motivation) program.
Come from agencies that serve the disabled population.
Receive ongoing individual support and group training from the grant's learning disability specialist and project director.
Contact their students via phone, e-mail, or in person at least twice a semester.
Submit progress reports for each student.
Provide an invaluable and objective means of support for Broward College students with disabilities.
