TRIO Training

The Office of Disability Services’ TRIO Grant Program offers trainings for tutors and workshops for Broward College professors and staff to better equip them to work with students with disabilities. With specialized training sessions and workshops, our attendees gain a better understanding of the causes and diagnoses of the various disabilities with which our students live. Through the hands-on, interactive activities employed, they have been able to experience some of the challenges (both physical and psychological) that our students must overcome in order to be successful in their classes. Additionally, attendees are provided with tools to determine learning preferences, strategies for teaching students with disabilities, and demonstrations of assistive technology.

Working with Students with Disabilities: General background information on various disabilities and tutoring strategies.

Working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students: Through hands-on, interactive activities, learn about the types and causes of deafness and hearing loss, Deaf Culture, American Sign Language, assistive technology, services available to the deaf and hard of hearing at Broward College, and appropriate teaching strategies.

Working with Visually Impaired and Blind Students: Experience first-hand some of the challenges college presents for students who are visually impaired or blind, learn about the types and causes of visual impairments and blindness, assistive technology and other services provided by Broward College, and appropriate teaching strategies.

Working with Students with Learning Disabilities: Through workstation activities, experience some of the challenges faced by students with learning disabilities, learn about various types of learning disabilities, assistive technology, other services provided by Broward College, and appropriate teaching strategies.

Learning Preferences: Discover experientially which learning style works best for you and find out how to help others learn more effectively by presenting class material in multi-modal fashion and incorporating assistive technology.

Technology for Hearing/Vision Loss: Through hands-on, interactive activities, gain a greater awareness of the difficulties encountered by students with hearing/vision loss and the impact on staff/student interaction; learn about the assistive technology available (e.g., C.A.R.T., JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, CCTV, Kurzweil, etc.); the services provided by Broward College and strategies to achieve classroom inclusion for students with these special needs.

Tools for Working with Students with Disabilities: Discover how disabilities are identified and how they impact student learning; review your own learning preferences and become acquainted with techniques that address different learning styles; learn about easily accessible tools and participate in a demonstration of available assistive technology.
