Broward College Offers In-State Tuition and Enrollment Waivers to Displaced Students from the Bahamas

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sept. 6, 2019) – Broward College has taken immediate action to implement the measures announced by the Florida Department of Education yesterday to expedite the admissions process for displaced students in the Bahamas who evacuate to South Florida following the devastating effects of Hurricane Dorian.

Pursuant to Governor Ron Desantis’ Executive Order, and under the authority of Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran, Broward College and other state colleges are permitted to waive - without limitation - residency, student record requirements, and fees to allow students displaced by Hurricane Dorian to enroll expeditiously. The waivers, which will be granted on a case-by-case basis, remain in effect until the expiration of the executive order.  Notably, the waivers benefit students already registered at the College and whose financial circumstances may have been affected by Hurricane Dorian. Students displaced for longer terms may also qualify for assistance under state homeless provisions.

“Hurricane Dorian has had a catastrophic effect on the Bahamas,” said Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. “I want to thank Governor DeSantis and Commissioner Corcoran for their quick response. During this most difficult time, we will be able to support those students who are determined to keep their dreams of a college degree alive. Our actions will ease financial burdens, remove barriers to enrollment and help these students at least get some part of their lives back to normal.”

Broward College has also joined with local efforts to collect relief supplies that will be sent directly to the Bahamas.

Affected students interested in attending Broward College can enroll for Session 4 classes, which start on October 15 and should contact:

• A. Hugh Adams Central Campus (Davie) – Shelia Rhodes,, 954-201-6030
• North Campus (Coconut Creek) – Leiya Mack,, 954-201-2922
