FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Sept. 17, 2018) – Looking to start the year off right in 2019? Broward College is accepting applications from community organizations to participate in the 2019 MLK Day of Service that encourages the public to take part in a day of volunteerism to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Through funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, has $200,000 for the development and completion of service projects that culminate on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.
Broward College will award funds to projects honoring the MLK Day of Service that meets an identified community need, engage volunteers in service, recruit a diverse cross-section of volunteers, support the legacy of Dr. King, and provide opportunities for sustained service and ongoing community involvement.
The awards are intended to encourage service projects that address education, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, basic needs, disaster preparedness, veterans and military families' issues, public safety or neighborhood projects.
Interested organizations are invited to outline how their proposed projects will enhance or impact Broward County. Applications are available through the Broward College MLK Day of Service website. The selected organizations will be eligible to receive awards up to $5,000 to directly support their proposed service projects. Applications are due on October 19.
Last year, more than 3,000 volunteers registered for projects. In total, the volunteers logged more than 13,000 hours of service.
