The City of Lauderdale Lakes Becomes the Third Municipal Partner to Sign on to Broward UP

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (July 29, 2019) – The City of Lauderdale Lakes is now an official partner of Broward UPTM. The community-centric approach developed by Broward College aims to raise education access and attainment levels, and drive social mobility and economic development across Broward County.

The City of Lauderdale Lakes joins the cities of Lauderhill and West Park as Broward UP municipal partners. Through the partnership, the City of Lauderdale Lakes will work with the College to fulfill its mission to provide innovative and excellent civil services to its residents.

The MOU approved by the City of Lauderdale Lakes Commission on June 25, will see the College providing direct support for:

  • On-site workshops, courses, and programs for residents
  • Certification training at identified locations aligned to employment within the City of Lauderdale Lakes
  • Access to training for City employees and residents to earn Broward College degrees and
    certifications
  • STEM, coding and technology training
  • College and career-readiness support for residents
  • Entrepreneurial programming

"Lauderdale Lakes continues its strong relationship with Broward College and looks forward to executing the MOU for Broward UP with a focus on zip codes with high unemployment," said City of Lauderdale Lakes Mayor Hazelle Rogers. "This is a long-term commitment to educational opportunities and entrepreneurial gains in the community."

Broward UP, which stands for 'unlimited potential' serves to remove barriers, improve lives through postsecondary attainment, and build partnerships to help every person realize their Unlimited Potential. While Broward County's unemployment rate is approximately 3.3 percent, it soars to more than 10 percent in some cities, with some zip codes reaching unemployment levels nearing 15 percent. In response to this disparity, Broward UP has adopted three goals: increase college access and attendance, improve degree and certificate attainment, and holistically raise social and economic mobility.

"We are grateful to have community partners that are committed to ensuring access to post-secondary education," said Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. "Our combined efforts under Broward UP will provide degree and certificate attainment opportunities that will transform lives."
