Broward College Steps To Early Field Experience

Congratulations on your decision to pursue a career in education. The education courses offered at Broward College will help you take the first steps of your journey to become a teacher.

Education majors must complete three common pre-requisite courses at the freshman/sophomore level. The designated courses are EDF1005 Introduction to the Teaching Profession, EDF2085 Introduction to Diversity and Exceptionalities for Educators, and EME2040 Introduction to Educational Technology. Both EDF1005 and EDF2085 require 15 hours of early field experience.

Early Field Experience Placement Procedures

1) Security Clearance

Each student must successfully pass a School Board of Broward County Security Clearance. Security clearance is not only required for early field experience and student teaching in Broward County Public Schools, it is required to obtain a teaching certificate in the State of Florida.

Students taking EDF1005 and/or EDF2085 must submit a copy of a VALID security badge to the Education Placement Office in order to be approved for early field placement. No students will be approved for placement without a valid security badge on file and therefore cannot successfully complete the course. Please visit the following link for more information about Security Clearance.

2) Register for Placement

After successfully completing the Security Clearance procedures, students must be register for early field placement on the School Board of Broward County Field Placement website (http://www.broward.k12.fl.us/hrdplacement). Please visit the following link for more information about how to Register for Placement.

Students cannot place themselves in early field placement. The Broward College Education Placement Office will verify security clearance and forward the student's request to the School Board of Broward County for placement. Students must monitor the website to receive their placement information.

3) Placement Process

Early field experience placements for each student will be arranged by the Broward County Field Experience Coordinator based upon information from the student's registration for placement. After consulting with the Broward College Coordinator of Clinical Education and Placement students will be placed at an appropriate early field experience placement. (Per Cooperative Agreement, Broward College students cannot place themselves).

Some students will be placed in private or charter schools. You will not be placed in a school that you have attended in the past three years, where you have completed previous early field experience, where your children attend, or where your relatives work. Students who are full-time classroom teachers in a Broward County School and wish to complete their observation hours at their place of employment must call the Education Placement Office at 954-201-8420 for placement instructions.

Full time teachers, with a State of Florida Temporary Teaching Certificate, must fulfill the early field experience requirement and are not exempt.

4) Placement Assignment

Once your placement is completed, you will be assigned a school and a cooperating teacher. You are not guaranteed your first choice of grade level or geographic zone. Students must monitor the website to receive their placement information. Students are required to contact their cooperating teacher within 24 hours of receiving their placement information. Early field experience must begin immediately after being placed with a school and cooperating teacher. Please take a copy of your Registration for Placement and your security badge to show the school's front office on the first day. You must visibly wear your ID badge every time you are on the school's property. During your first visit with your cooperating teacher it is recommended you provide him/her with a copy of your course syllabus as well as a copy of the Cooperating Teacher Guide (available on Placement Documents) (Please link "Placement Documents" to the new Placement Documents link of this website, thank you)

5) Placement Refusal

The Broward County Public Schools have refusal privileges regarding early field placement under the following circumstances: a) the right of refusal is retained pending a positive assessment of the student's potential; b) refusal or withdrawal from the early field experience may result from the same conditions as those effecting in-service teachers. The same legal issues apply; e.g. indictment would result in refusal of the privilege or suspension from the experience.

6) Crisis

If a crisis situation occurs, regarding any Broward College early field experience student, the school principal, in cooperation with the Broward College Coordinator of Clinical Education and Placement, will retain the authority to decide the conditions for that student's continuance in the school.

7) Attendance

Attendance at all scheduled early field experiences is mandatory. In the event of illness or an emergency, the student is responsible for notifying the cooperating teacher in advance. Arrangements must be made with the cooperating teacher for make-up dates. Students must sign and adhere to the field experience contract or be subject to dismissal from early field experience. Students may not receive a grade in their education class unless early field experience is completed. Only one makeup session will be allowed.

8) Contract

Students must complete the Early Field Experience Contract in blue ink after developing a schedule with the cooperating teacher on the first day of early field experience. The number of hours in the classroom must be a minimum of two hours, a maximum of four hours per session per course. Students must give the cooperating teacher a copy of the contract, keep a copy for themselves, and send the original to the Broward College Education Placement Office immediately upon beginning their early field experience.

The Education Placement Office is located at:

Broward College, South Campus
7200 Pines Blvd, Bldg 85
Pembroke Pines, FL 33024

9) Log Report

For each early field experience session, you must fill out the Log Report in BLUE ink and have the cooperating teacher sign in BLUE ink to verify your attendance. After each early field experience session, complete an Early Field Experience Report Form and/or other assignment designated by your education instructor. Submit the report or assignment to your course instructor. When you have completed your early field experience:

1. Make a copy of the log report and submit it to your cooperating teacher. Remind him/her to also complete and send the Cooperating Teacher Reaction Form to the Broward College Education Placement Office (the address is listed above). 2. Provide your course instructor with the original log report. 3. Complete the Final Summary Report reflecting on your early field experience and/or other assignment and submit to your course instructor.

Broward College hopes your early field experience will be a positive opportunity to gain an understanding of the field of education and to validate your choice of teaching as a career. If you have any questions about your early field experience or encounter any problems, please contact:
