Broward College retirees activity update

Periodic retiree update from Catherine Quinlan:

December 2008

Another year is coming to an end, and it’s time for our last BCC luncheon of 2008. We are grateful there were no serious hurricanes in our area this year, though one came close. At our get-together last month, we appreciated the beautiful view of a serene ocean from the dining room at Pelican Grande Resort, where we were provided with good food and service.

At the luncheon Gloria Guth informed us of her planned trip to Italy – her Thanksgiving dinner may have been spaghetti and meatballs! Hedy Sarby wrote that they were extending their stay in North Carolina since her 93-year-old mother-in-law passed away in Oct. If you’re looking for BCC retirees, check out North Carolina - you may also run into Jean Berry and her husband. Returning from a wedding in Colorado, Celine Bernier packed up again to set off for her home in St. Barth to make sure the storms did no damage to her property. Also missing from our luncheon, Marilyn Draizin was home celebrating her birthday (we won’t say which one!) with a host of relatives from near and far. This summer Mary Bacon spent a month in Minnesota with family and friends. In August she and her daughter took a memorable 2-week cruise around Alaska. Our last luncheon was held on Tony and Gail Casale’s 43rd wedding anniversary. They did also fly to San Francisco to visit their son. Wilma Paquette took a plane to Montreal to attend a family wedding. On her return home, Wilma learned she required surgery, from which she is slowly recovering.

Now for a little change of date: Because of conflicts during the holidays, rather than meeting on our usual third Thursday of the month, we will meet on the second Thursday, or December 11th – which is next week! The site of our luncheon will be the Jacaranda Country Club at 9200 West Broward Blvd., west of Pine Island Road and across from Central Park. A bountiful buffet will be provided for $15, including beverage, tax and tip.

Remember, this is a week earlier than usual – Thursday, December 11th, 1:30 p.m. As in past end-of-the year luncheons, you’re welcome to bring along friends or family members. Let me know by Tuesday, December 9th, if you can come. And –

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

November 2008

We enjoyed another lunch together last month and added Vienna Restaurant to our collection of “must return.” It was good to see Pearl Elias and Corinne Pape back with us again after a few months’ absence.

Our retirees keep busy. Tom Green is now a new local commissioner. Seems you can’t take the politics out of the man!
Celine Bernier flew to Colorado for a friend’s wedding, and Sheila Brauchler was visiting relatives in Port St. Lucie. A shipboard e-mail from Judy vanAlstyne informed us that she was cruising the Black Sea before going to England for 3 weeks. Ellie Hill enjoyed a river cruise around New England and back down to Florida in October, and this month she expects to be in Mexico. Joyce Warden writes of their grand cruise and tour of Alaska this summer. Marge Stafford and her husband no sooner got home from a wedding in New Jersey than they left for 3 days of kayaking rivers in north Florida. Elaine Comes sent greetings from her home in Concord, NC. Terry Hamilton wrote from North Carolina that he had no sooner picked the last tomato from his garden than the next day it snowed. Summer is over! He had recently joined some still-working BC instructors at a Biology conference in Memphis. Gloria Guth traveled to Arkansas for the sad occasion of the funeral of a young family member. We received a letter from Mme. Paulette Couvillier expressing sadness on the passing of Debbie Nycz. She recalled the courage of many faculty members during difficult times in the early years.

Broward College is planning a Lyceum Awards and Gala celebration at the Fort Lauderdale Grande Hotel on November 7th which was to include the formal presentation of the Presidential Medallion to J. David Armstrong, Jr., and to celebrate Broward College becoming a four year institution.

Andrew Dutka, of Broward College Archives and Special Collections, invites us to visit the BC Archives on the 4th floor of the Central Campus Library. Catherine Leisek, Faculty Senate President, is requesting information pertaining to the traditions of the Senate at the College.

On Thursday, November 20, 1:30 p.m., we will lunch at Pelican Grand Beach Resort, 2000 N. Ocean Blvd. on Ft. Lauderdale Beach just south of Ireland’s Inn. Valet parking is necessary. For a total of $15, our entrée choices are: Chicken Caesar Salad; fresh Mahi-Mahi Sandwich (grilled or blackened); or Inside-Out Burger (marinated cheeseburger stuffed with Swiss and Brie cheese), and coffee or tea.

Please let me know your choice before Tuesday, November 18.
