FAQ

Q: What are my scheduling options for taking this program?
A: This program is offered on a full or part-time basis with classes held in the day and evening. However, the six-semester approach to earning an A.S. Degree in EMS is based on a full-time course load.

Q: How long is the EMS program?
A: The EMT course is 1 semester long. The paramedic training is 4 semester in length. The total for time for complete the EMS program is 6 semesters.

Q: How long is a semester:
A: For the EMS program, a semester typically 16 weeks or about 4 months. The college does offer mini-semesters but none are available in the EMS program.

Q: Do I have to have special training to take the EMT course?
A: No, special training is required. The only requirements are those required for admission into Broward College and the program. These are things like transcripts, back ground checks, drug screen, high school diploma or GED, shot record and physical, and AHA-CPR/BLS card.

Q: Is the EMS program difficult to get into?
A: Entry into the EMS program is first-come first serve after admission. However, the program space fills very quickly so a spot in the class is not guaranteed.

Q: What do I do if the class I want is full?
A: If the class you want is full you can ask to be put on a wait list by calling the department.

Q: Why do I have to have a background check and a drug screen?
A: These are college and program requirements. For health care students, these may be required by the agencies providing the clinical and internship sites.

Q: What if I don't pass (or fail) the drug screen or back ground check.
A: Students must successfully complete both. If for some reason a student is not able to successfully complete this requirement, we will review each case individually. However, if a students fails a screen or back ground check they will not be admitted into the program.

Q: When can I sign up for classes:
A: After admission to Broward College I would start to complete the paper work and submit it to admissions as soon as possible so when enrollment opens you can get the class you want. So start 6-8 weeks prior to enrollment.

Q: When is enrollment?
A: The academic calendar is available online simply click on the calendar link on the Broward College home page.

Q: Can I transfer to Broward College EMS program from another college?
A: Students can transfer their EMT training (typically 11 credit hours) from another college. However, transferring during paramedic training is not recommend and will be reviewed case by case.

Q: What if I got my training from a private program, that is not college based can I still transfer?
A: To enter into the paramedic training program at Broward College you must be state certified at the EMT level. However, you will not be given college credit for the EMT training until the semester of graduation for your A.S. Degree in EMS. If you completed all of your training, Paramedic, at a private program not college based, we typically do not award credit at all for your training.

Q: How do find out when and where my classes are?
A: You should review your schedule before the start of classes. You can review this on-line by logging into your account. Additionally, you can get a printed copy at the campus you are attending. Review the campus maps for locations. It is recommended that you visit your campus before classes start or go early the day of your class.
