About the Engineering and Computer Science (North Campus) Department

Department Information

BCC offers a well-established Electronics Engineering Technology program, in existence for more than 40 years, supported by industry, and very highly recognized throughout the state of Florida and nationally. The program has also been designated as a Center for Electronics Emphasis by the Florida High Technology and Industry Council. The program also received the U.S. Secretary of Education's award for the best technical program in the southeastern region of the United States.

BCC's Electronics Program graduates high-level technicians who find employment in a variety of high-technology corporations throughout the country. From its inception, BCC's Electronics Engineering Technology program has set the standards for electronics education throughout the state, and has been referred to by the Florida High Technology and Industry Council as "a model program for Electronics Engineering Technology education." The single most contributing factor in its success is the personal interest manifested by the College in general, and the Department in particular, in the educational development of the individual student.

Articulation (Transfer of Credits)

BCC's Electronics Engineering Technology Department believes that articulation is essential to growth and development. Consequently, every effort is made to communicate effectively with schools, vocational-technical institutions, universities, business, industry, and the community. To that end, the Electronics Department initiated and established articulation agreements with both Atlantic and Sheridan Vocational/Technical Centers to allow their graduates to enter the Electronics Program at BCC and to receive credit for some of the courses completed at those schools. In order to provide the students with opportunities to continue their education, the Electronics Engineering Technology Department has articulated with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and the University of Central Florida. Approximately 50 percent of the Electronics A.S. degree students continue college to earn a Bachelor of Science degree. Articulation with business is a key factor in the progress of the Department. For example, successful articulation with BellSouth has led to the providing of electronics training for their employees through the existing Department courses. Special industry training needs have been met by classes at company sites and at BCC.

What is Engineering Technology?

Engineering Technology is the part of the technological field requiring the application of scientific and engineering knowledge and methods combined with technical skills in support of engineering activities. The Department of Engineering Technology offers four majors leading to the degree Associate of Science in Engineering Technology.

Engineering Technology Curriculum

Why Study Engineering Technology at Broward Community College?

Broward Community College offers quality Biomedical, Computer, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering Technology programs in which students learn the technical skills needed to gain employment in the field. Students also receive a well-rounded education in both technical and non-technical areas including communication skills. Highly skilled engineering technicians are in demand throughout the world. Research studies show they receive higher pay than other comparable two-year degree graduates. They enjoy their work and have many choices, such as:

Ο Continuing their education to obtain a bachelor's degree
Ο Crossing over to other professions
Ο The U. S. Department of Labor has classified the jobs of biomedical, computer, electronics and telecommunication engineering technicians as being among the fastest-growing occupations in the country.

Ο Tuition and fees are 40% less than Florida state universities, making BCC the best value in Broward County.
Ο Tuition is also much lower than local private institutions.
Ο BCC's Electronics Engineering Technology program received the U.S. Secretary of Education's award for the best technical program in the Southeastern United States.
Ο BCC has been designated by the State of Florida as a Center for Electronics Emphasis.
Ο Class sizes are kept small, which allows faculty members to give each student individualized attention.
Ο Flexible schedules are available. Most courses can be taken during the day or evening.

Ο A wide range of courses is available, including courses transferable to university level.
Ο A wide variety of services is offered, such as cooperative education, expert advisement, student disability services, financial aid, library, learning resource facilities and tutoring.
Ο Upon graduation, students wanting to continue their education and obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering technology can do so at several universities.

Industry Services

BCC has the capability of delivering engineering training programs and courses that address specific business and industry needs. These workshops, seminars and courses can be pre-designed jointly by BCC and the participating company. The programs can be either credit or non-credit and are offered on-site or at BCC facilities

Resources & Facilities

The college has extensive and well equipped engineering technology laboratories in all principal areas of electronics engineering technology. These include electronic circuits, digital logic circuits. analog devices. microprocessors communications, telecommunications, networking, biomedical and microcomputer troubleshooting. Fully equipped CAD and robotics laboratories are also available. Computer laboratories are also provided for the engineering technology students.

The North Regional Library is a state-of-the-art facility which contains electronics and computer magazines and books for use by technology students.

Most facilities are open beyond the normal class periods to allow students to work on class-related projects. Various academic labs provide students with computer-assisted learning in the general education courses.

In addition to the range of clubs and special interest groups at Broward Community College, students enrolled in the Engineering Technology programs may participate in student organizations including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Engineering Technology students also have the opportunity to participate in design competitions, field trips, presentations, seminars and lectures.

Courses are taught by faculty members whose qualifications are based on both experience and education. Specially qualified individuals from industry are invited as guest lecturers to teach selected courses. Faculty advisors within the major are available to provide one-on-one assistance to students throughout their course of study.
