Broward College Visioning Retreat

PURPOSE

Broward College is preparing for an upcoming visioning retreat where selected members will collaboratively develop a new vision and mission in light of our transition from a level 1 to a level 2 institution.  A vital part of this process requires the gathering of evidence that depicts the history of Broward College. It also requires an external scan of local demographic, population and occupational projections. These web pages are intended to provide this information to a general audience interested in viewing this evidence.

BACKGROUND

Broward College has provided higher education and vocational training to the citizens of Broward County, since it opened its doors to 687 students in August, 1960. At that time, sixty-nine university-parallel courses, mainly at the freshman level, were offered. The first and principal access to higher education in its district, the Junior College of Broward County was initially controlled by the Board of Public Instruction. The College moved from its quarters in the old Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station to its permanent location at Central Campus in 1963. By August 1964, two-year technical programs were expanded, with the addition of seven new programs. That same year, the College began a calendar of year-round operation. By December, 1965 the College was fully accredited by SACS, and in 1968 control was transferred to a governing District Board of Trustees. The institution was renamed in September 1970, and in 1971 the North campus was opened. By 1980-81, the South campus was in use. Today the College has three campuses and seven centers.
