Professional Practice Experience (PPE)
The Professional Practice Experience (PPE) courses are critically important classes for the HIM Student. Having the opportunity to apply what you are learning in the classroom setting to real life experience allows the student to begin to “link academic knowledge to operational function” in the real work environment. Our program has two PPE courses. The courses have course assignments and each student produce a manual reflecting what they have learned at their host facility.
The PPE 1 course is given at the end of the first year over the summer. Students are placed in healthcare facilities and concentrate on daily operational functions of health record departments. Students are introduced to the facility licensure, accreditation, and daily operational procedures related to patient records by applying what they have learned to this point in the program.
The PPE 2 course comes during the final semester of the second year. By this time, the student has a greater understanding of operational functions and this course begins to focus more on the management aspects of health records and health information systems of their assigned facilities.
PPE host facilities are located in Broward and Palm Beach counties and placement is based upon host facility availability. This is daytime course where the student is working in an actual healthcare facility for 8 hours/1 day a week for the 8 weeks. Please be aware, this course is not available for evening placement.
