Silvina Di Pietro’s story starts when her four grandparents leave Italy, escaping the horrors of WWII and Mussolini's reign. For many Italians, Argentina was the land of opportunity, and it became the home of many during that time. Her parents were born and raised in Argentina, and after deciding to have a life together, they moved to New York City in search of a better future. When Silvina’s mom was six months pregnant, they made yet another move back to their native Argentina. Silvina was born on February 11, 1990, and just after six months, the whole family moved to New York City once again, just to be back in Buenos Aires, Argentina only two years later. Silvina was raised in Buenos Aires until she was 12. In 2002 Argentina suffered an economic crisis; as a result, the Di Pietro family decided to move to Florida for good, in search of a better life.
Silvina was very homesick, she missed her school, family and friends. However, when she got to high school, she became very active. Silvina was involved in the Ecology Club, Student Government, was selected to be treasurer of French Club by one of her French teachers and was chosen by members to be the president of the International Club. In her sophomore year, she ran cross-country, and during all four years of high school, played tennis for the school's tennis team. This was a valuable experience because she learned how to interact with other teammates, play against other high schools, while managing school work, a job, and maintaining good grades. She occupied the 7th spot in her high school's ranking, amongst 399 students.
Throughout high school, she chose French and Art classes as electives. French allowed her to participate in the French State Competition in Orlando, and be an active member in the French club. Art allowed her to express herself. Painting is one of her hobbies; she enjoys painting landscapes with oil painting, watercolors, but mainly acrylics. Thanks to work and love of art, she was a recipient of the Arts for the Future Scholarship and won first place in Florida in the "Drop Savers Water Conservation T-shirt” contest.
Silvina also enjoys traveling, being outdoors and admiring nature. This past summer she was a recipient of an all-expense paid trip to Italy. The National Italian American Foundation received 250 applications, 34 were chosen, and Silvina was one of them. This was her long time dream and going to Italy was an experience she will never forget.
Silvina is majoring in Chemistry and plans to become a biochemist and/or pharmacist. She is also a member of the Honors Student Committee and Phi Theta Kappa, the Pre-Pharmacy club member and plays tennis for the Broward College Women's Tennis Team as well.
