Educational Planning for Students

Information Technology has been working with the Associate Deans of Student at North, South, and Central campuses to provide students and advisors web based screens that will allow students to view their educational plan and advising details online.  Phase 1 of the project was to provide students online capability to make an appointment with an advisor.  This phase uses advisors GroupWise calendars to determine when an advisor has a time slot available for a student to be advised.  Students can make appointments that fit into their schedule and since going live midway through the winter term, over 25,000 appointments have been scheduled online, with over 4,900 being scheduled after hours when BCC advising staff are not in the office.

Phases 2 and 3 are currently being tested by advisors and counselors with a planned implementation in mid September, 2006.  Phase 2 provides a web front end to the CID advising screens and allows advising staff to easily record information given to students in an advising session.  Phase 3 integrates the advising details entered by advisors into myBCC so that students can view the information that they were given by their advisor.  This phase will also provide students with the ability to plan a few semesters ahead with regard to the courses they would like to take in future terms.

Phase 4 will start shortly after the implementation of phase 3.  It's goal is to provide a rules based engine that will allow students to be advised online without the need to see an advisor.  Phase 5 will add Cyber Advising via chat to students who have questions but need not come on campus to see an advisor.
