Visa and Passport Info

Applying for a passport is an exciting first step to your semester or summer abroad!

 

Visas and passports can take 4-6 weeks or more to process so early application is key! In order to apply for a visa, students MUST have a passport in hand before they apply in person at the appropriate consulate.

 

In order to apply for a passport, students must complete the appropriate documentation and apply in person at their local post office or city hall.

 

In order to apply for a visa, students must complete the required application and apply in person at the consulate in their jurisdiction. Appointments can ONLY be arranged online through the consulate web site to apply for a visa. They do not accept applications by mail nor e-mail.

This is my first time applying for a passport - how do I apply?

Start by visiting the U.S. State Department web site at www.travel.state.gov and clicking on the link for "First-Time Applicants." You will need to complete the "Form DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport" either online or by hand. In order to apply for a passport, you will need to gather together the following documents:

1) Complete the "DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport Form"

2) Your certified birth certificate

3) A valid driver's license

4) A passport photo ​

My passport has expired - how do I apply for a new one?

You must apply for a new passport by mail. Please click here to learn more about how to renew your passport. ​

I am studying abroad in Spain for a semester - do I need a visa?

Yes, all students studying abroad in Spain for a semester will need to apply for a "Student Visa."

I am studying abroad in Spain for a summer - do I need a visa?

Students with a U.S. passport do not need to apply for a visa for the Summer in Spain program. However, students with a non-U.S. passport MAY need to apply for a visa. Please contact the International Education Office if you hold a passport from another country.

I am studying abroad in Germany for a semester - do I need a visa?

Students with a U.S. passport do not need to apply for a visa to study abroad in Germany for a semester. However, students with a non-U.S. passport MAY need to apply for a visa. Please contact the International Education Office if you hold a non-U.S. passport.

I am studying abroad in Germany for a summer - do I need a visa?

I am studying abroad in Peru for a semester - do I need to apply for a visa?

No, students do not need to apply for a visa and are to enter as a tourist. This will NOT require you to visit a Peruvian consulate before you depart, if you are a US citizen. When exiting the airport, custom officials are authorized to stamp up to 180 days to each tourist. When you enter the country, you will need to state how many days you will be in-country (as a tourist), and they will stamp your passport for that number of days.
