BCE opened its doors in Guayaquil in 1985 as a branch campus of Brookdale Community College of Lincroft, NJ.  In 2006, the New Jersey institution ended its ties to BCE and in January of 2007, they became an affiliate of Broward.  The college offers courses leading to an AA degree at two locations in Ecuador, Guayaquil and in Quito, at the campus of a fine international school, Academia Cotopaxi.

The Broward program in Ecuador was approved by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 2007.  Students who earn the AA degree at BCE can transfer to Florida colleges and universities without losing any credits.  Based on a Florida Articulation Agreement between community colleges and the eleven state universities in Florida students holding the AA from Broward College, even if earned in Ecuador, will be given Junior status upon matriculation in a university in this state.  Students often pursue degrees outside of Florida and in such cases are generally successful in transferring their degrees to the US or Canada.
