FAQ's About Study Abroad

Frequently Asked Questions about Studying Abroad

1. I am an international student - can I still participate on a study abroad program?

Yes, international students can participate on BC-sponsored study abroad programs. However, please keep in mind that students who participate in a study abroad program MUST register for the course or courses that are offered through the study abroad program. International students will continue to pay out-of-state fees for the tuition for the courses, in addition to the program cost (lodging, airfare, excursions, etc.)

2. I am a non-Broward student - can I still participate on a BC-sponsored study abroad program?

Yes, however you would still need to register for the courses that are offered through the study abroad program. If you do not live in Florida, then you will have to pay out-of-state fees for tuition.  You will also need to register as a "Transient Student" at Broward College so you can obtain a transcript once you have completed your study abroad program.  Students can complete the "Transient Student" application online at www.broward.edu and click on the "Apply to Broward College" link.  The student would then be responsible for insuring that their home institution would accept credits from Broward College.

3. Do I need to register for the course or courses that are offered through the study abroad program?

Yes, all students must register for the courses that are offered through each study abroad program.  The tuition for the courses is not included in the program cost (lodging, airfare, excursions, etc.)  If you do not wish to take the courses for credit, students must audit the course, for which there is a fee as well.

4. Can I travel on my own after the study abroad program ends?

Yes, students may travel on their own after the program ends, but they must obtain permission from the program coordinator.  If they are granted permission, then the student is responsible for paying and arranging their travel plans after the program has ended.

5. I receive financial aid - is financial aid applicable to the study abroad program I want to do?

If a student receives financial aid that is applicable to SUMMER courses at Broward College, then yes, that aid would be applicable to tuition only and not the program cost of the study abroad program.

6. What are the eligibility requirements to participate in a study abroad program?

Students need to have a 2.5 GPA and need to be 18 years of age.

7. Can I participate in more than one study abroad program?

Yes, as long as the programs do not overlap and students are able to finance the program cost and tuition for both programs.

8. Can I bring my children on a study abroad program?

Students are not encouraged to bring their children on a study abroad program.

9. I've already satisfied the course or courses that are offered through the study abroad program I want to do - do I still have to register for those courses?

Yes, you must register for the courses that are offered through each study abroad program.  If you've already satisfied a course that is offered through the program you want to participate in, then the course would count as elective credit.

10. Can I take a course that is not offered through the study abroad program or make arrangements with the professor to take a different course?

Students must register for the course or courses are offered through each program. Students are unable to make "special arrangements" to take a different course.
