Scholarships to Study Abroad
The International Education Office offers two scholarship opportunities to Broward College students, the William E. Greene Scholarship (WEGS) and the Summer Scholarship to Study Abroad (SSSA). These scholarships are designed to help students defray the cost to study abroad through funds awarded by the International Education Office. The other scholarship opportunities listed are offered through external organizations. When applying for a scholarship, please carefully review the eligibility requirements and application procedures. The deadlines to apply for the scholarships usually falls 6 months to a year prior to the start of the study abroad program so early application is encouraged. This is by no means an exhaustive list of study abroad scholarships, there are numerous opportunities available. This list is just a starting point for students to begin their research.
1) William E. Greene Scholarship (WEGS) - this scholarship is for students who want to study abroad for a SEMESTER in one of three locations: Spain, Ecuador, and Singapore. This scholarship is a full award and covers a student's program cost, airfare, and visa fees.
2) Summer Scholarship to Study Abroad (SSSA) - this scholarship is for students who want to study abroad in the SUMMER on a BC-sponsored study abroad program. This scholarship is a partial award and helps to cover a student's program cost to study abroad.
3) CCIS Scholarship - This scholarship is offered by the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS), a consortium under which Broward College coordinates the CCIS programs in Spain, Germany, and Peru. Eligibility is restricted to students from CCIS member schools planning to attend a CCIS program. Scholarships will only be awarded to students with no previous collegiate-level study abroad experience. Applicants must demonstrate financial need to their home study abroad office. In addition, applicants must demonstrate distinction or recognition in either scholarship, leadership, or service to their campus or the wider community (preferably all three). CCIS offers both summer and semester scholarships.
4) Gilman Scholarship - Broward College students are also encouraged to apply for the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, which is sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Each year, the Gilman Organization awards Students can apply for the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad for either a summer, semester, or academic year. In order to be eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship, students must be a recipient of the Pell Grant and must be a U.S. citizen. Awards range between $3500 and $5000.
5) Freeman-ASIA Scholarship - Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States. From 2001 to 2009, Freeman-ASIA supported over 4,000 U.S. undergraduates from more than 600 institutions with their study abroad plans in East and Southeast Asia. This scholarship is open to students who wish to study abroad for a summer or semester.
6) David L. Boren Scholarship - Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. In exchange for scholarship funding, all Boren Scholars must agree to the NSEP Service Requirement. The NSEP Service Requirement stipulates that an award recipient work in the Federal Government in a position with national security responsibilities.
7) Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) - FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. The financial support for these scholarships is provided by generous donors, who are committed to increasing study abroad opportunities for dedicated American students.
8) Institute for International Education - Founded in 1919, the Institute of International Education (IIE) is a private nonprofit leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. In collaboration with governments, foundations and other sponsors, IIE creates programs of study and training for students, educators and professionals from all sectors. These programs include the flagship Fulbright Program and Gilman Scholarships administered for the U.S. Department of State. IIE also conducts policy research, provides resources on international exchange opportunities and offers support to scholars in danger.
