Summer Scholarship to Study Abroad (SSSA)

The Summer Scholarship to Study Abroad is designed to help students with financial need defray the cost of participating in a BC-sponsored study abroad program.

To be considered for the Summer Scholarship, a student must:

1. Show proof of a minimum GPA of 2.5 and completion of twelve credit hours in 1000 - and/or 2000 - level courses.

2. Be a degree-seeking student.

3. Be eligible to enroll in, currently enrolled in, or have completed ENC 1101.

4. Obtain one letter of recommendation from a faculty member typed on Broward College letterhead, submitted along with the Application.

5. If required, be available for a personal interview with the International Education Committee.

6. Attach unofficial BC transcript to the Application

7. Write a 500-word essay about how participation in a study abroad program would benefit your academic, professional, or personal goals.  Please include in your essay the rationale for your program choice. The essay should discuss aspirations, future plans, and any other pertinent information the student wishes for the International Education Committee to consider.  Attach this essay to the Application.

8. File for federal financial aid in order to receive maximum funding for expenses in a study abroad program.  Although not a firm requirement, as our resources are severely limited, if you are currently receiving or eligible to receive federal or state financial aid you should plan to apply this aid toward your study abroad expenses.  You should request no more assistance than is absolutely necessary, and never more than one-third of the total program cost.  Please be as honest as you can when completing the Estimated Expenses worksheet that is included in the Application.

9. Obtain a valid passport valid through the end of the study abroad program.  If you are not a US citizen, verify your legal status to travel outside the US. BC-sponsored study abroad programs do not verify, obtain, or guarantee applicants permission to travel outside the US.

10. Pay the initial deposit for the program in which you wish to participate. A copy of the deposit (check) must be submitted along with the application.  Applications submitted without copy of the deposit will not be considered.

11. Participate in an activity that will promote study abroad opportunities at Broward College. Within 60 days of returning to campus, recipients of the scholarship are required to conduct a short presentation about their experience in four classrooms. The IE office will help arrange these presentations. Alternately, students not returning to Broward College can arrange to meet this obligation by creating a video, writing a testimonial, or completing some other activity as dictated by the IE office.
