OVERVIEW

This program is comprised of 5 elements, including this tutorial, the College-Wide Integrated Database system (CID), the BCC website, the BCC catalog, and your supervisor or trainer.
As we progress through this training program, you will utilize all 5 of these training elements as you learn to become a highly effective academic advisor. First, let's look at an overview of the responsibilities of an academic advisor and see where Academic Advisement fits in the Student Affairs Division.

General Functions
The general functions of an academic advisor include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Un-official transcript evaluations
  • Assisting in course selection
  • Providing information on academic programs
  • Providing general information on admissions and testing procedures
  • Completing substitutions and waivers of courses
  • Completing educational plans providing referrals to other departments for information or services
  • Providing graduation evaluations and transfer information Providing information on college policies and procedures.
Technical Skills
As you learn to assist students in these general functions, you will become proficient in the following technical areas:
  • CID (The college wide Integrated Database System) - used for accessing and manipulating student records
  • Groupwise- BCC's email client and appointment system
  • BCC Imaging system- resouce for viewing scanned transcripts
  • Microsoft Word - word processing program
  • Microsoft Excel.- spreadsheet program
  • Online Advising Portal- Online resource for advisement
Useful Web Resources
As an advisor, you have many web resources at your disposal that will help you assist students. Some of the most common are:
  • Broward.edu- The BCC website, including the employee intranet.
  • Facts.org- web resourse for post-secondary educational information and services.
  • College Source- virtual library of college catalogs
  • Career Assessment Tools (Discover, Sigi, E-choices, etc.)

First Tmie in College Students:
Once a new student has been admitted, applied for financial aid, and visited the testing center, his or her next stop is Orientation/Advisement Session. There are other types of students you will be dealing with such as transfer and transient students. In laters sections, we will discuss the different types of students you will be dealing with in more detail, but first, let's take a look at the different types of degrees and certificates that are offered at BCC.
