There are different types of students that attend BCC, from First time
in college students, to students preparing to graduate. You can determine
a student's admission status by referring to the Admission screen in the
CID system. this will become clearer when you begin CID training, if you
haven't already.

| Prospective Students |
There are several questions to ask a prospective student that assist
you in determining admission status:
Have you previously attended college?
If the answer is YES, determine
if the prospective student is returning, or a transfer, transient,
or non-degree seeking student. These types of students will be
discussed in further detail in the next few sections.
If the answer is NO, then continue with the following question:
Do you have a GED, High School degree or Certificate of Attendance
Degree?
GED and High School degrees are acceptable. Certificate of Attendance
graduates need to earn a GED to be eligible for acceptance.
Are you interested in being a degree or non-degree seeking student?
All students must complete an application in order to enroll.
Not all students are required to take a placement exam. See Placement
Testing Requirements for more information on who does and does
not need to take a placement exam. This information is also summarized
in BCC's Six
Simple Steps to Enrollment webpage.
|
| First Time in College Students |
Students who are attending college for the first time will
need to do the following things before being advised:
|
- Complete application for admission
- Provide official copy of high school transcript or GED results
- Provide official SAT/ACT results (not more than 2 years old)
- Take the CPT exam if SAT/ACT scores not available or if the student
wishes to retest
- Attend mandatory orientation session
|
Once the FTIC student has done these things, then he or she can make
an appointment to see an advisor or counselor for educational planning.
When an FTIC student comes to Advisement for his or her appointment,
you will most likely need to perform one or more of the following tasks:
|
- Provide an educational plan
- Explain any academic restrictions that are based on testing placement
levels
- Provide advice on what courses to begin with, based on their placement
levels and their chosen program of study
- Direct them to Career Services if they need help deciding on a major
|
LUMINA GRANT & PLACEMENT GUARANTEE
New Students may have some academic restrictions
based on their placement testing scores. Students who test into college
prep courses in all three subject areas (math, reading and English) will
either fall under the "Placement Guarantee" (PG)
or "Lumina Grant" (LG)
designations which restrict what courses they are eligible to take in
their first term. In many cases you as the advisor will be responsible
for populating
a student's advisement screen in CID to reflect these restrictions.
Click
here for more information on LG and PG restrictions. |
Returning Students
|
The returning student must first go to Admissions and complete
a Re-entry application if he/she has been absent from BCC for one year
or longer. Have the student submit official transcripts from any institution
attended while away from BCC. You may review un-official transcripts with
the student as lon as they have requested that official transcripts be
sent.
|
- Determine the applicable catalog year requirements. Did the student
miss more than one major term(Spring or Fall) in the last year? If so,
they will be subject to the requirements of the current catalog.
- Review the student's placement levels in math, reading, and English
as determined by his or her scores on the College Placement Test, the
SAT or the ACT.
|
 |
Click
here to view the CID testing screen |
|
- Also review the students transcript to see if they have already begun
taking courses in those subject areas. If the student has attended any
other institutions in his or her time away from BCC, official transcripts
must be received and evaluated. Often, students intend to use courses
taken elsewhere to satisfy general education requirements at BCC. If
those courses have different common course numbers, they will have to
be officially substituted using the Substitution and Waiver form
Substitutions/waivers
are discussed in more detail in subsequent sections).
|
|

here to view the CID transcripts screen |
| |
- Determine if the student needs to be retested. If the student has not
yet taken any course in the areas of math, reading, and English, they
will need to begin at the levels designated by their test scores.
If
the student's test scores are more than two years old, the student will
have to re-test for any subject area in which he or she has not already
begun coursework. If a student'sCPT test scores are more than 3 months
old, he or she has the option of re-testing if they wish to try to raise
their
placement level in a particular area. There is a $15 charge for retesting.
A student may also choose to retake the SAT or ACT at any time if their
scores are no lnoger valid or if they wish to improve their placement
levels.
- Review Academic history (you will learn how to review degree audits
in your CID training sessions) and determine what courses the student
needs to take in order to graduate.
- Discuss courseload. Determine if they want to be a full time or part
time student.
|
| |
| Transfer Students |
Transfer students must provide official transcripts from all institutions
within 30 days. You may review un-official transcripts with the student
as lon as they have requested that official transcripts be sent. |
| |
- Determine if all official transcripts have been received by viewing
the credentials screen in CID. (The command path to the credentials screen
from the main menu in CID is SR TR EX PS.)
You can also see an overview of which transcripts have been received
and whether or not they have been evaluated using the following path:
AD CR TR
.
- If transcripts have been received electronically but not yet evaluated,
you can view them by using the following path: AD CR PS
- If transcripts have been received through the mail (paper
transcripts) but have not yet been evaluated, you can view them on the
BCC imaging system.
- Give student transcript request form if they have not yet requested
transcripts.
- If necessary, refer student to on-line system to request Florida transcripts.
- Once all transcripts have been received the evaluation department will
automatically evaluate the student's transcripts. If the student is in
their second semester or later and or is returning to BCC from another
institution, you may email a request of evaluation to the evaluators.
- Complete any necessary course substitutions and waivers (substitutions/waivers
are discussed in more detail in subsequent sections).
|
| |
| BCC adheres to the suspension/dismissal policy of the student’s
prior college. Transfer students will not be admitted to BCC if they are
not eligible for readmission at the institution where they have previously
attended. Failure to report previous college work attempted constitutes
a falsification of application and subjects the student to loss of all
credits earned. Suspension will result. |
Quarter Hours and Clock Hours
Many students transfer from programs that are based on clock hours to credit-based programs. The conversion from clock hours to credits is as follows: 75 clock hours = 2.5 credits.
Many out-of- state or private schools run on quarter hours. You can use the following table to convert quarter hours to credit hours at BCC:
A quarter hour is 2/3 of a semester
1 QTR= 0.6 semester credits
2 QTR= 1.3 semester credits
3 QTR= 2.0 semester credits
4 QTR= 2.6 semester credits
5 QTR= 3.3 semester credits

| Transient Students |
- Transient students from other institutions may register for any course
included on their transient form from their home institution. Copy the
transient
form for
the files
(unless student used electronic transient form through Facts.org).
- BCC students who wish to take courses at other institutions as transient
students must first complete an online transient student form at Facts.org.
Each campus has assigned individuals that approve or deny online transient
forms. The student has the ability to track the progress of his or her
transient form by logging in to Facts.org using their BCC student ID
and password. Once approved, the student will be able to apply and register
for the approved courses at the other institution.
- Transient students must provide copies of transcripts and prove eligibility
in order to register for courses that require prerequisites if they don’t
have a transient form
.
- Transient students (students transient to BCC from another institution)
should not be degree seeking at BCC.
- It is the responsibility of the transient student to know which courses
will be accepted by their host institution.
- In some cases, students who receive financial assistance can continue
to receive their funds as a transient student. Students should consult
the Finanical Assistance officer at their home school.
|
| |
| Graduating Students |
| |
Students who are graduating should come to advisement to
make sure they have met all degree requirements.
|
- You will review their degree audit with them and make them
aware of any requirements that have not been met, including course
requirements and exit testing (CLAST Exam) if necessary. Click here for
more information on the CLAST exam and possible exemptions.
- Make student aware that schools have different application deadlines
and direct them to the website of the school they wish to attend.
- Make Student aware of transfer workshops that take palce each term.
- If the student has met all graduation requirements, apply the student
for Graduation in the CID system if the system has not applied them automatically
(If you are not authorized, have an advisor or counselor who is authorized
complete
this
task). Then,
give
them a Candidate for Graduation form. They will take this form to the
cashiers' office and pay the appropriate fee for graduation.
- Provide information about the graduation ceremony if applicable.
|
| |
| Non-Degree Seeking Students |
| |
- Non-degree students may take any course at BCC which does not require
a prerequisite and which does not require placement.
- Non-degree students may take up to 12 credits before a placement test
will be required.
- Non-degree students will not qualify for financial assistance.
|
| |
| International Students / EAP |
| |
- International Students who wish to attend BCC
must have the equivalent of a United States High School Diploma. If
the international student has attended a university outside the United States,
his or her original transcripts (in the language of the original
country)
must be submitted along with an official translation from either
Joseph Silney or World Translation Services. University transcripts must
have
a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or it's equivalent.
- In addition to the submission and translation of foreign transcripts,
international students must also show evidence of English proficiency
if English is the applicant's second language. Foreign applicants
must provide a copy of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
with
a minimum passing score of 500(written) or 173 (computerized) to be
admitted to BCC. Once admitted, they will then be directed to take
BCC's ESL placement test, the LOEP exam to establish course placement.
International students
who are already in the United States do not need to take the TOEFL
and may take BCC's ESL placement test (the LOEP exam) to determine
English proficiency.
Students
who
take
the
LOEP exam may have to complete EAP courses before attempting college
level English or Reading and may have additional academic restrictions.
Please see EAP Requirements for more information
about EAP courses.
- International Students attending BCC under an F-1 visa must be full
time (12 credits or more) each fall and winter term and must complete
a minimum of 24 credits in one academic year.
- International students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of
2.0 to remain eligible to attend classes.
- International Students must maintain lawful F-1 visa status and may
not enroll beyond the expiration date of their I-20 form.
|
| Health Science Program Students |
| |
- Students who wish to pursue one of BCC's Health
Science Program degrees must meet the admission requirements of the college
and complete any necessary college prep courses as well as any program
specific pre-requisites before being allowed to submit a Health Science
application.
- Each Health Science program requires a seperate application. Each application
requires a non-refundable $20 application fee.
- The student must submit transcripts of all previous college work ,
with the Health Science application, to the Office of the Associate Vice
President/District Registrar, 225 East Las Olas Blvd. Ft. Lauderdale,

| High School / Early Admissions
Students |
| |
Eligible high school students may apply for admission to
BCC and enroll in college-level courses to increase learning and shorten
the length of time needed to acquire a college degree. Special application
and approval procedures apply to students in all BCC
accelerated programs. Written authorization from the principal, guidance
director, and parent or guardian is required for Dual Enrollment,
Early Admission, and Credit
in Escrow. |
Dual Enrollment and Credit in Escrow students should be referred to
the designated Dual Enrollment Officer on your campus. Early Admissions
students may come to advisement for academic advising or counseling.
There are some limitations on the kinds of credits early admissions
students are allowed to take. Generally, they are limited to general
education courses. A full listing of approved courses as well as other
important information regarding dual enrollment / early admissions can
be found here: Dual
Enrollment Eligibility Requirements. |
| |
| Students Undecided on Their Major |
| |
Students who have not decided what program of
study to persue should be directed to their campus career center as well
as the BCC website under "Self
Assessment - Career Center". The Career Center resources include
self exploration and interest inventory tools, and Career research
tools that match careers with programs of study.
