Retirement Home Program

This term the Retirement Home program is involved in planning fun and creative events for the residents at Springtree Retirement Home. Last month we had a Mardi Gras celebration. There were at least 70 residents in attendance and several dedicated PTK members came out to help and make the event a big hit! We had several authentic masks and colorful beads and some saucy jazz to create a real New Orleans atmosphere. The PTK members worked hard to serve snacks and refreshments to each resident. In turn, a few talented residents sang a song for us and then the whole group sang us a song. Many residents asked when we would be back!

On March 30, 2002 we organize a Wedding Day celebration. The residents will bring pictures and share stories about the day they were married. This will provide excellent insight to wedding and courtship traditions of times past. PTK members will vote on the best stories from a male and female resident and stage a mock wedding. I made halos for the bride and two bridesmaids. Also, each resident will receive his/her own fresh rose to wear with satin ribbon. I also have a garter belt for the bride to add humor and fun to this unique event.

This program is special to PTK because it provides an experience to touch someone's life. Most people at the Retirement Home have family, but they don't see them as often as they like. Residents look forward to these events like we look forward to our vacations and family reunions. Just as we value the innocence of children and enjoy their youthfulness, the same beauty is in older people too. I think that each PTK member walks away from these events with a feeling of accomplishment and a deep feeling of connection to humanity.

Thanks for getting the message out!

   Kids in Distress

Generally, Kids In Distress gets together with kids once a month. We either go to their shelters in Wilton Manors or Oakland Park. Sometimes, we are able to take the children on field trips, such as West Lake Park and the Planetarium. We want to provide a fun time with the children. We play games, do arts and crafts, and have lunch. We provide a fun time for the children, new experiences. Even for the adults, it is a rewarding experience to get together with the children.
Here is a direct quote from kids in distress: "kids in distress is a safe, healing place for young children battered by family violence. KID offers shelter and treatment for the youngest victims of abuse, abandonment, and neglect.
