The Gordon Rule

The Gordon Rule requires that students graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree must complete a minimum of 24,000 words of writing under guided instruction provided in specifically designated courses. The requirement must be met under the following provisions:

1. You must complete 12,000 words by taking two 6.000-word composition courses.

•  You must take ENC1101 (Composition I)

•  You must take one of the following two courses: ENC1102 (Composition II) or ENC2210 (Professional and Technical Writing).

2. The remaining 12,000 words of the requirement may be completed in one of two ways:

•  By taking a third 6,000-word college composition course (ENC1102 or ENC2210) and two courses from Areas 2 and 3 which are designated as writing courses (3,000 words per course).

•  By taking four courses from Areas 2 and 3 which are designated as writing courses (3,000 words per course).

In all writing courses, a grade of “C” or higher is necessary to meet both the Associate of Arts Degree and Gordon Rule requirements.
