History:
In the spring of 2005 Broward College acquired the contents of the former South Florida Museum of Natural History, known locally as the Graves Museum. The museum had a rich history, with locations first in downtown Fort Lauderdale and later on Federal Highway in Dania Beach before it closed its doors in 2004
Mission:
By accepting the stewardship of the BC Graves Museum Collection, BC is committed to maintaining the collection as public trust, for which they will provide conscientious care indefinitely. As part of this stewardship, BC aims to incorporate this cultural asset into the curriculum and to provide community access to the Collection via virtual and real-time exhibits and to partner with other appropriate community cultural agencies to provide additional community access. At all times, the Collection will strive to support the BC Mission and Education Master Plan.
Community Partners:
BC has partnered with the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) to exhibit items from the collection. Currently objects from the dinosaur fossil collection are on display there. Plans to display objects from the Jacobs Gems and Minerals Collection, some of which may be seen on this site, are also in progress at MODS.
