BCC Music Lessons: FAQs

Can anyone take music lessons? Are there any special requirements?

Any BCC student can take music lessons. Class lessons have no additional fees or requirements; Applied lessons have a corequisite and a fee.

What is the difference between "class" and "applied" lessons?

Applied lessons are private lessons, where each student meets with the teacher individually; class lessons, designed for beginners, are taught in small groups. In the BCC course schedule, you can easily tell the difference: class (group) lessons have specific days and times listed, while applied (private) lessons are listed as TBA.

Which one should I take?

If you are a beginner (or near-beginner) and want to take voice, piano, or guitar, take class lessons. Otherwise, take applied (note corequisite below).

What are the requirements for taking class lessons?

None. Just sign up as you would for any class: either go to the BCC registration site or visit any BCC campus registration office. (Note: do NOT use the Applied Music Registration form).

What are the requirements for taking applied (private) music lessons?

All students may take applied lessons as long as they are involved in some aspect of the music program (other than Appreciation). This means that you must be concurrently enrolled in any music course except MUL2010.

What specific corequisites qualify me to take applied lessons?

Check the Music Class Schedule. Taking any course which begins with MU (except MUL2010, Music Appreciation) qualifies you to take applied lessons during that same semester.

Should I take hour or half hour lessons?

Normally, you should take half hour lessons unless you meet one of the following: (1) you are a music major; (2) you are a theatre major and want to take an hour of voice; (3) you have already taken lessons for several years.

Are there special fees to take lessons?

Class lessons have no special fees. Applied (private) lessons have a special fee, in addition to tuition, of $50 per semester for a half hour lesson or $100 per semester for an hour lesson.

How do I register?

Class lessons do not require special permission. You may register for them the same way you register for any other course: either go to the BCC registration page or visit any BCC campus registration office.

Applied lessons require special permission. Either fill out the applied music registration form or come by the Central Campus Music Department (Map).
