Welcome to the General Education Site at Broward College!
Broward College is firmly committed to measuring the effectiveness of its academic programs, and planning that supports improved student success. As the college adds Bachelors degree programs, tracking "institutional effectiveness," and using the data to improve academic programs becomes even more vital to the future of the college. The cornerstone of all degree programs (AA, AS, AAS and baccalaureate) is general education, a collection of courses designed to provide the foundation for future studies. |

The "Gen Ed" Team

Ten faculty members who teach General Education courses are involved in a pilot project which will decide how to assess whether students have attained the 15 General Education competencies. Measureable specific learning outcomes from twenty courses linked to a number of the BC competencies are being assessed during the 2009-2010 academic year. Professors from the General Education areas of Communication, Humanities and Fine Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences, and Mathematics are developing a variety of methods to assess student learning. Data gathered will affirm that effective strategies are being used at our college, and create a road map for faculty where courses can be improved to support student learning.
Assessment Team members have worked diligently with their colleagues this semester to create an assessment mechanism for general education courses. This pilot group, under the leadership of Joyce Walsh-Portillo (Business faculty, Central) has been supported by Steve Obenauf (former chair of the General Education Task Force 2004-2006), Dawn Broschard (Director of Institutional Effectiveness) and two ex-officio members - Irmgard Bocchino (AVP and Honors Program Director) and Russ Adkins, VP for Academic Affairs.
