Student Life Recognizes Achievement
Recognizing the hard work and contributions of the individual, is something that is woven into the very fabric of our society. Even though team work, and team success is often more important, we still take the time to recognize at least one member of that team, who’s individual achievements contributed the most to the success of the team; such as the MVP award (Most Valuable Player) that is given out at the end of the championship game. With that in mind Student Life held it’s second annual Awards Night Banquet, with the intention of handing out a few of it’s own MVP awards.
The Willis Holcombe Center Awards Night Banquet, took place on Saturday May 8th, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, in the 12th floor board room of building 33. The students, faculty, administrators, and guests who were in attendance that night, were treated to dinner, desserts and the smooth jazz of Joseph Tapper.
Students were honored, not only for their contributions to student organizations but their academic achievements as well. The “Academic Excellence Award”, presented by
Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Eileen Holden, was given to students who had a minimum GPA of 3.25 and were involved in two or more student organizations. Each individual club also presented its own “Academic Excellence Awards” to the members of it’s organizations who also earned a 3.25 GPA or higher, as well as “Outstanding Service to the Club” and “Member of the Year” awards. The following students were honored by their respective student organizations: Richard Sterne, Crystal Campbell, Yashica Davis, Alberto Flores, Shantelle Harris, Mike d’Oliveira, Heather Mizer, Stella Mbah, Roberta Dragan, Elizabeth Long, Sabrina Taylor, Masi James, Tabitha Ponte, Karl Mielke, Wendy Lueder, Gina Christi, Zakiya Drummond, Melissa Ho and Sara Pittendreigh.
Student Life also took the time to recognize the accomplishments of Student Organizations. Student Life presented the “Organization of the Year” award to Student Government Organization and the “Program of the Year” award to Student Ambassadors, for their AVID program. Student Life also recognized Vernon Jones as “Advisor of the Year and honored him accordingly.
