Fort
Lauderdale High School’s AVID program, sponsored by The College
Board, visited BCC’s Downtown Center on May 23rd. After 2
months of planning, Student Ambassadors greeted 34 FLHS freshmen.
The day trip was intended to encourage these guests to start planning
for their college education. The event had a packed schedule, and
students were split into groups to participate in interactive workshops.
Vernon
Jones, Director of BCC’s Gear-Up program, led the workshop
called “College Success.” Carol Brinson, Student Affairs
Counselor, led “Career Planning,” showing participants
how to navigate the Internet for career resources. Jill Thompson,
of Downtown Center’s Interior Design Faculty, showed AVID
participants the latest technology using the computer as an exciting
tool in 3D interior design. Angel Rodriguez, a BCC Professor of
the Year award winner and Downtown Center Science Professor, showed
students how to develop their own website.
Presentations
were given by representatives from AIAS, the architectural student
organization. Christine Lilja, Downtown Center’s Student Government
Association President, presented a leadership and team building
activity. Participants networked around the room as a way of getting
to know college faculty, staff and Downtown Center Ambassadors.
It was a nice ice-breaker and showed students how easy it is to
meet college people. Lunch was provided by BCC’s Vice President
for Student Affairs Bob Cabello. Atlantic Bread Company served box
lunches of either Tuna, Turkey or Ham and Cheese, and each box contained
lots of extras.
Downtown
Center’s Student Ambassadors, who served as the day’s
tour guides, wanted to have a positive effect in influencing their
high school visitors’ decision about going to college. And
they did! Event evaluations were unanimously positive, and comments
included “The presentations were amazing,” “The
Student Ambassadors were great,” “I look forward to
attending BCC,” “I hope to come back soon.” This
last comment apparently echoed other participants. Downtown Center’s
Enrollment Services Coordinator, Diana Martin, who is responsible
for the entire day, received an e-mail from AVID Director, Joanne
Izzo, who said the students are still talking about the day and
can’t wait to come back. Crystal Campbell, Chairperson of
the Student Ambassador program, was instrumental in developing and
planning this educational event. |
