On June 20th,
Downtown Center Student Life sponsored a health fair for the DTC students.
The event ran from 11:00am - 1:00pm and then again from 4:00pm - 5:30pm
to accommodate day and evening students. Local organizations were on hand
to inform students of the services they provide to the community. Broward
County Health Department, Center One, Sexual Assault Prevention Center,
Mental Health Association and the American Cancer Society were among the
vendors dispersing information on breast care, HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, alcohol
abuse, tobacco use, prostate cancer, violence and more.
The students also learned about
BCC programs and services. The director of the BCC Eye Care Clinic, Lloyd
Holness, did preliminary eye screening. Joan Sherrod of Peer Educators
was giving out free condoms and talking to the students about HIV education.
Julian Caicedo was talking about ways to stay fit, by introducing the
students to the Seahawk Workout Center and BCC Intramural programs. Sandra
Stone of the BCC Massage Therapy department, and seven of her students
came out to give free mini massages to help relieve the stress of college
life. The event was very successful and informative for students, and
Student Life hopes to run this program twice a year.
