Florida Atlantic University and Broward Community College hosted the
first Downtown Fort Lauderdale World Music Festival on Saturday, October
27th in DDA Plaza Park, across the street from the new Downtown Higher
Education Complex. There were 5 non-stop hours of music, dance performances,
and food. And everything was free. Several hundred people attended,
including children who danced, bounced in the Bounce House, had their
faces painted, posed for caricatures, and ate popcorn. Some of the musical
and dance styles included Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Ska, Samba, South American
(Music of the Andes), Scottish, Maculele, Batucada and Capoeira. Performers
invited audience members to dance with them, and they had no trouble
finding eager participants. A paella chef cooked the Hispanic dish under
an open tent, and everyone ate as much as they wanted. There were sandwiches,
veggies and whipped cream tarts Tres Leches dessert. Arts and crafts
vendors displayed their work around the park’s perimeter creating a
huge circle filled with music and dance, food, smiles, entertainment,
and fun.
