On April 21, 2004,
the Willis Holcombe Center’s African American Student Union
(AASU) held a “Rock the Vote” event to increase awareness
of the importance of voting in this year’s election. Volunteers
from Broward’s League of Women Voters came out to register people,
hand out absentee ballots and answer any questions the students had.
AASU gave out free hot dogs, soda and popcorn just for stopping by
the table and encouraged students to register to vote. “Every
vote counts”, states Sabrina Taylor, AASU president. SGA president
Mike d’Oliveira, had this to say, “It is important to
vote, because choosing our leaders ultimately determines the state
of our country”. The event was a great success more than doubling
our previous record of newly registered voters. |
