St. Patty’s day is
notorious for a good time which most often entails a scrupulous amount
of alcohol for college students. Downtown Center Student Government
sought to highlight this trend by encouraging students to sign a no-drinking
pledge for this 2003 holiday. Student Government representatives, clad
in traditional green garb, decorated the north lobby in true St. Patrick’s
day theme colors with shamrocks, green candy and a sneaky leprechaun
that resembled the SGA Vice-President, Eric Cotto.
Total, SGA gathered over 100 pledges during a two-hour period and students
who submitted a pledge were encouraged to visit Student Life the day
after to receive a prize. The event was experienced as a great success
and gave SGA not only an opportunity to educate students about the potentially
fatal dangers of excessive drinking as well as drinking and driving,
but also to recruit new members and share the event calendar with the
DTC student body.
