Downtown Center Student Life and Student Government Association hosted a Welcome Back Cookout for BCC students on September 5, 2002 from 11:10am –1:00pm and for BCC and FAU students from 4:30pm –7:00pm.

The day event brought out over 100 students to enjoy BBQ chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, coleslaw and baked beans catered by Scrubby’s Barbecue. Tony “Hitman” Hernandez of Power 96 entertained the students along with Jump USA’s famous stomach turning ‘Space Ball’. Everyone who attended was able to talk with recruiters and representatives from the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department, Broward Sheriffs Office, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, local legislative candidates, and Neighbor to Neighbor, who gave students the opportunity to register to vote. Representatives from Lynn University and FAU were on hand talking with students about their plans for the future, as well as BCC’s Tiger Tail representatives, who familiarized students with BCC’s water sports facilities, many of which are free. Student representatives from various clubs hoped to inspire and recruit students to get involved in organizations such as African American Student Union, Student Government Association, Student Ambassadors and Christian Club, just to name a few.

The evening event, co-hosted by BCC and FAU, brought out close to 150 students to enjoy Scrubby’s catering, gourmet coffee, pastries and live Flamenco music and dancer. The evening students also had the opportunity to meet with an FAU recruiter, Tiger Tail representative, Neighbor to Neighbor, American Institute of Architecture Students and local legislative candidates.

The event was well attended and a big hit with the students. Hope to see you at our next event.
