How to Apply
Step 1: Apply to Broward College (BC). Read & follow the instructions for applying to the college on the Future Students page. Part of the application process includes having your transcripts sent from other colleges/0universities to BC. You may also need to meet with an advisor to complete any placement tests & evaluate transcripts.
Step 2: Complete program prerequisite courses. The following courses must be completed with a "C" grade or higher or transferred in from another college/university prior to submitting a Radiography Program application:
ENC 1101 English Composition
HSC 1531 Medical Terminology
BSC 1085 Anatomy & Physiology I
BSC 1085L Anatomy & Physiology I Lab
CGS 1060C Computer & Internet Literacy
MTB 1310 Applied Mathematics or MAT 1033 Intermediate Algebra
Note: Courses more than 10 years old will have to be evaluated to determine if they need to be repeated.
Step 3: Apply to the Radiography Program. Submit a Health Science Limited Access Admission Application from January to March. See the Health Science Program Prerequisites sheet located on the Health Science Admissions Web page for the exact date in January when applications will be accepted & the cut-off date in March. Besides successful completion of the prerequisite courses applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA in order to be eligible for program admission.
Step 4: Complete the Pre-Health Science Core Requirements. Students must take the certificate courses listed below prior to starting the program. Health Careers Core Curriculum (HCP 0001) does not expire for 10 years, so it can be taken in any 10 year period prior to program admission. However, all of the other courses (HSC 0405, HSC 0522, HSC 0591, HSC 0691, & HSC 0692) expire after 2 years. So the ideal time to take these courses for the first time is in late June, July, or early August just prior to entering the program. Doing so will insure that they do not expire while you are in the program.
Students who already have certificates can use them for program entry & will simply renew any that expire during the program by re-taking the appropriate course(s):
HCP 0001 Health Careers Core Curriculum
HSC 0405 Basic Life Support (CPR) Students
HSC 0522 Tuberculosis/OSHA/Hepatitis For Students
HSC 0591 HIV/AIDS (Students)
HSC 0691 Domestic Violence For Students
HSC 0692 Prevention of Medical Errors
Note: The above courses may be "waived" or substituted for those students that have prior certification or coursework. Certifications from other approved institutions will be accepted as long as they meet the following criteria:
- CPR courses must be approved by the American Heart Association.
- HIV/AIDS, TB/OSHA/Hepatitis, Domestic Violence, & Prevention of Medical Errors courses must be approved by the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control and/or be included in the Florida Department of Health CE Broker tracking system.
- All courses submitted must be equal in the # of hours earned as compared to equivalent BC courses.
Step 5: Complete Admission Requirements. Upon
acceptance into the program students are required to undergo criminal background checks, fingerprinting, drug screening, & a physical examination.
Instructions for how to apply to BC & the Radiography Program, information about prerequisite courses and other topics concerning admission requirements & policies can all be found in the
Online College Catalog. See the
Health Science Program & Policies section of the catalog for detailed explanations.
Selecting Students:
Once students have successfully completed
all 6 prerequisite courses (i.e., ENC 1101, HSC 1531, BSC 1085, BSC 1085L, CGS 1060C, & MTB 1310 or MAT 1033) & have applied to the Radiography Program with a minimum
2.5 GPA, admission will be based on a point system. Points will be awarded for the number of general education courses completed toward the A.S. Degree in Radiography (exclusive of the prerequisite courses).
One point will be awarded for each course successfully completed with a minimum of a "C" (or "S") grade regardless of the number of credits. The
maximum # of points that an applicant can be awarded is 5 (6 if the applicant is also a HOSA student). The points awarded for courses completed at BC or that are transferred in as equivalent are as follows:
1 |
BSC 1086 Anatomy & Physiology II |
1 point |
2 |
BSC 1086L Anatomy & Physiology II Lab |
1 point |
3 |
Humanities/Fine Arts Elective |
1 point |
4 |
Social/Behavioral Science Elective |
1 point |
5 |
SPC 1024 Intro to Speech Communications or SPC 1608 Intro to Public Speaking |
1 point |
Note: Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) students who meet all of the application criteria are eligible for one (1) additional point.
Students with the highest point totals will be offered admission to the program based on availability. In the event of a tie, admission will additionally be based on date of application (i.e., first come, first serve). Students are therefore encouraged to apply as soon as possible in January. Only those applications meeting the program selection criteria will be considered. Incomplete applications or those received before students have completed the prerequisite courses will be returned to the applicant.
In the event that both points & date of application are identical, admission will be additionally based on the student's grade point average (GPA).
Students selected for the program will be notified by the Admissions Department via e-mail during the month of April. Those accepted will be required to attend a pre-admission session & accept or decline their place in the program. Students can defer entry into the program until the following year by request. However, such students must enter the program the following August. Those who do not enter the following year will have to reapply for admission. Students who do not attend the pre-admission session and/or fail to contact Admissions to accept, decline or defer entry into the program will need to reapply for the following year.
There is no waiting list to get into the Radiography Program at Broward College. Each year applicants are accepted based on the criteria stated above. Those who are not admitted must reapply for the following year.
Approximately 40 students are accepted into the program each year.
